Mercedes-AMG will reveal its all-electric super sedan in June, marking the end of the era for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Its successor is the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

The new high-performance electric sedan will deliver over 1,000 horsepower, offering impressive power. It will be the first AMG model developed as an electric vehicle (EV) from the start.

The upcoming electric sedan is based on Mercedes-AMG’s in-house developed AMG.EA platform. It brings to life the design of the Vision AMG concept unveiled in 2022, embodying AMG’s new design philosophy. Recently released teaser images reveal a sleek, coupe-like roofline reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan, a four-door silhouette, and a low, dynamic body that exudes a commanding presence.

While it’s still unclear whether the final design will feature a liftback or traditional sedan styling, industry experts expect it to blend practicality with sporty aesthetics.

AMG is also working on an SUV version of the electric super sedan, using the same platform. Both models aim to prioritize driving pleasure while showcasing a completely new design language, distinct from existing V8-powered models.

The core technology of this electric super sedan is the axial flux motor developed by the British company YASA. This innovative motor delivers an impressive performance of 480 horsepower and 81.6 kg·m (601 lb-ft) of torque per unit, while weighing half as much as a traditional radial flux motor.

By installing one motor on each of the front and rear axles, the vehicle can achieve a total output of over 1,000 horsepower and 138.3 kg·m (1,019 lb-ft) of torque, competing directly with high-performance electric cars like the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Audi RS e-tron GT.

Notably, despite its dual-motor setup, the vehicle offers all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive configurations, likely to appeal to enthusiasts seeking a more dynamic driving experience.

Despite the impressive performance, the vehicle’s weight remains a challenge. The existing plug-in hybrid V8 model weighs 2,390 kg (5,270 lbs), so the all-electric version is also expected to have a substantial weight.

However, thanks to its lower sedan body and improved aerodynamic design, it is expected to offer a longer driving range than the SUV variant. This will provide a clear advantage regarding battery efficiency, one of the most critical factors for EVs.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

As Mercedes-AMG enters the high-performance EV market, its biggest challenge will be winning over its existing fan base.

AMG enthusiasts value the roar of the V8 engine and the high-revving experience, so the key question is how AMG will replicate its signature driving feel in an EV.

This concern was evident in the recent launch of the new C63, where AMG replaced the iconic V8 with a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. However, the market response did not meet expectations.

For this electric super sedan to succeed, it must balance preserving the essence of AMG’s combustion-engine heritage and showcasing the unique advantages of electric performance.
