Subaru is finally adding a hybrid powertrain to its best-selling SUV models, the Crosstrek. After beating the Forester in the US market in 2024, the Crosstrek continued its momentum in the first quarter of 2025, becoming the brand’s second-best-selling vehicle in the US.

Subaru’s strategy is to solidify this momentum with a hybrid model. The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is scheduled for a US launch in the fall of 2025 and will once again challenge the compact SUV market with electrification and the latest safety features.

Design changes are minimal

Hybrid change is expected

The Crosstrek Hybrid is almost identical to the gasoline model in appearance. While maintaining the same body size and practical silhouette, it attempted to differentiate itself through the exclusive exterior colors of Sand Dune Pearl, Citron Yellow Pearl, and 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels. Thanks to the ground clearance of up to 8.7 inches and the ample wheelbase, it is an SUV that allows stable driving on everyday roads and in light off-road environments.

The digitalized instrument panel and physical buttons are appropriately combined in the interior. The 12.3-inch digital cluster integrates Apple Maps and navigation, and the 11.6-inch center display comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Although the passenger space is among the top among compact SUVs, the loading space has been reduced somewhat due to the hybrid system.

Regarding powertrain, Subaru’s latest hybrid system, which is also applied to the Forester, is at the center. A 2.5-liter horizontally opposed boxer engine (162 horsepower, 154 kgf.m) and two electric motors are combined, and the total system output reaches 194 horsepower. The transmission is a Lineartronic CVT, and a symmetrical AWD system is also provided as standard. Fuel efficiency has not yet been disclosed.

Practicality and balanced performance

Strengths of a hybrid SUV

The Crosstrek Hybrid is designed to respond to various conditions, from urban and suburban areas to highways and unpaved roads. It is aimed squarely at customers who prioritize practicality. EV mode allows for a quiet start in the early morning, and manual mode conversion is supported to enable active response in hilly or overtaking situations. In addition, X-mode and hill descent control have been added to secure light off-road driving capabilities.

Safety specifications have also been enhanced. Subaru’s latest driving assistance system includes pedestrian and bicycle recognition, automatic emergency braking, and emergency stop assist functions. Reverse automatic braking, blind spot detection, and rear side warning are also provided as standard. The balance in all areas, including interior space, powertrain, infotainment, and safety features, increases the Crosstrek Hybrid’s competitiveness.

The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid features a Japanese hybrid powertrain and is subject to the US government’s 25% tariff. Subaru is considering relocating its production site or localizing parts to maintain price competitiveness. As competition in the hybrid SUV market is fierce, attention will be paid to what outcome Subaru’s decision will lead to in the future.
