Renault’s plan to modernize the iconic R5 Turbo generated significant interest. The R5 Turbo 3E, redesigned for the electric vehicle (EV) era, stands out with its unique design, performance, and price combination. Priced starting at 135,000 GBP (approximately 179,000 USD), only 1,980 units will be produced worldwide. The number 1980 honors the year the original R5 Turbo was first introduced, adding a historical reference.
Renault positions this model not as a retro electric car, but as a new mini supercar category. Despite its compact size, it offers supercar-rivaling performance, tailored for high performance in urban environments. The bold design, in-wheel electric motor system, and refined handling technology make the R5 Turbo 3E a forward-thinking performance hatchback, going beyond just a nostalgic reinterpretation.

More Than Just a Nostalgic Throwback
Renault’s Powerhouse on Wheels
The R5 Turbo 3E combines a retro design with cutting-edge EV technology. It features in-wheel motors on each rear wheel, producing 536 horsepower, powered by a 70 kWh battery. This allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in just 3.5 seconds. With a top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph), its performance rivals that of track-only vehicles.
The vehicle features an 800V electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging capabilities. A 350 kW charger can charge from 15% to 80% in just 15 minutes. Despite its impressive performance, the vehicle weighs just 1,450 kg (3,197 lbs), made possible by a carbon composite body that ensures lightweight design and strength. This is only 1 kg (2.2 lbs) heavier than the original Renault 5, a remarkable feat considering its supercar-level performance.
One of the standout features is its customizable production. Buyers can work directly with Renault designers to choose exterior colors and interior finishes, offering a fully personalized vehicle. However, with the high starting price, customization options will likely increase costs. This approach signals Renault’s ambition to build a premium image in the luxury EV market.

Supercar Heart in a Hot Hatch Body
Setting New Standards for Futuristic Retro Design
The R5 Turbo 3E incorporates elements of supercar design, making a bold statement in terms of style. Compared to the original R5, it’s grown by 6.2 inches (158mm) in length, 10.1 inches (256mm) in width, and 4.6 inches (118mm) in height, with an extended wheelbase to enhance stability. Aerodynamic features like the front splitter, rear wing, and side air intakes are reminiscent of supercars. It modernizes the design DNA of the original Turbo series while maintaining an imposing presence.
The handling is equally impressive. With in-wheel motor technology, each wheel is independently controlled, allowing for precise cornering without needing an electronic differential. Developed by Protean Electric, this system also includes a drift mode and vertical handbrake functionality, maximizing agility on the track. This allows the driver to experience sharp, responsive handling.
The driving range also ensures practicality. It can cover up to approximately 249 miles (400 km) on regular roads, and maintain performance for 15 to 20 minutes at top speed on the track. Thanks to an advanced battery system with improved heat management, the car can maintain stable performance even after high-speed driving. Combined with quick charging, it offers practicality and performance. The R5 Turbo 3E is recognized for making the EV era’s dream car a reality.
