The design of Renault’s next-generation C-segment SUV, the new Austral, leaked ahead of its official reveal. Following the recent success of the Grand Koleos, Renault is drawing attention in the industry and among consumers by launching another SUV that emphasizes design changes. Notably, the leaked images show a front-end appearance that differs significantly from the current model, leading to assessments that this is effectively a new car-level facelift.

The released images follow Renault’s typical layout and format for internal sales guides. Analysts suggest that the similarity between the initial leaked image and the second batch of materials indicates that these are internal reference images rather than conceptual renderings. As a result, the new Austral will likely be produced with this design.

Front-End Overhaul Signals New Design Language

The most visible changes are at the front of the vehicle. The new leaked Austral retains the upper headlamp design from the previous model while incorporating new boomerang-shaped daytime running lights (DRL) at the bottom. This design has been seen in the recently unveiled coupe SUV, the Rafale, and the concept car, Symbioz, indicating a continuation of the family look.

The grille has also been redesigned. The frame has grown larger than the previous model, and the emblem has moved from the top to the center of the grille. This adjustment visually enhances stability and lowers the vehicle’s perceived center of gravity. The bumper has been reshaped with a sportier design.

The new Austral will offer more powertrain options. In addition to the current gasoline and mild hybrid (MHEV) versions, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option is expected. Reports suggest that the existing 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine may be replaced by a more efficient 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo, which would help meet European fuel economy and emissions standards.

Leak Likely Authentic, Suggests Significant Model Update

This marks the second leak following the previous incident. Both images display consistent features in the headlamp configuration, grille design, wheels, and bumper details, suggesting they are official renderings intended for internal distribution rather than simple concept designs.

The image format matches Renault’s internal sales documentation, adding to their credibility. Industry analysts noted that following the Grand Koleos launch, this major design update for the Austral could reflect broader changes in Renault’s SUV lineup.

If Renault adds such a high-quality design SUV to its offerings, the new Austral could strengthen Renault’s position in the compact SUV market globally. The automotive community is watching Renault’s next moves closely.
