Isuzu’s flagship SUV, the MU-X, underwent a significant transformation and will debut in South Africa in May 2025. Isuzu has unveiled the pricing and key features for the top-tier 3.0TD Onyx XT trim. The Onyx XT boasts comprehensive exterior, interior, and safety upgrades. Market expectations remain high despite a price increase compared to the previous 3.0TD Onyx model.

While this vehicle might be unfamiliar to some U.S. consumers, the MU-X is currently a popular choice in markets like Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, and South Africa. Although not officially available in the U.S., the premium Onyx XT trim could potentially be adapted to American tastes, positioning it as a competitive contender in the large SUV segment.

A Fresh Take on the Previous Model

Embracing a Premium Off-Road Identity

The MU-X Onyx XT features a distinctly different exterior compared to its predecessor. The front features an aggressively sculpted bumper, sharply redesigned headlights, and an XT-exclusive black high-gloss grille, leaving a bold impression. Gloss black finishes on the wheel arches, side mirrors, and 20-inch alloy wheels create a unified visual appeal, giving the vehicle a rugged look, unlike the previous body-colored paint job.

The rear has been refreshed with a horizontal tail lamp trim and a new lighting signature, bringing a modern change. The XT emblem is prominently displayed at the front, sides, and rear, highlighting the model’s flagship status. These design changes signal the MU-X’s evolution from a family-oriented SUV to a premium off-road contender. The increased ground clearance further enhances its commanding presence.

Powertrain Challenges in a Changing Market

Addressing the Shift Away from Diesel

However, for Isuzu to successfully launch the Onyx XT in global markets, there is one key challenge: the powertrain. Currently, the 3,000cc diesel engine (190 horsepower, 332 lb-ft) provides adequate performance, though it does not fully align with the latest powertrain trends expected by consumers in the U.S. and European markets.

The recently introduced 2.2-liter RZ4F diesel engine, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission in Thailand, has garnered positive reviews for its fuel efficiency and driving characteristics. If Isuzu aims to expand globally, integrating this new powertrain would likely be a priority.

With tightening diesel regulations in North America, Isuzu may need to consider hybrid or turbocharged gasoline options for long-term viability. A diverse powertrain strategy appears essential for the Onyx XT to compete globally. For reference, Hyundai’s Palisade excluded diesel options from its latest full model change.

Strong Product Potential

Flexibility Remains Key

The MU-X Onyx XT demonstrates competitive strengths in design, features, and off-road capability. By evaluating market response in South Africa and refining its offerings, Isuzu could position the Onyx XT as a rising star in the global SUV market.

However, success in the global market cannot be assured by simply being a “good car.” A flexible powertrain that meets diverse consumer needs, enhanced safety features, and a well-balanced pricing strategy will be crucial for the Onyx XT to establish itself as a strong global contender. Industry observers closely watch how Isuzu will move forward with its next steps.
