Archer, an Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer, has announced plans to partner with United Airlines to establish an air taxi network in New York City.

On Thursday, The Verge reported that Archer and United plan to operate the electric air taxi Midnight using New York’s existing heliports. The Midnight can reach speeds of 150 mph and cover distances up to 100 miles. It uses electric motors for vertical takeoff and landing before transitioning to forward flight.

The aircraft, which can accommodate four passengers and a pilot, will depart from heliports on East 34th Street, West 30th Street, and in Lower Manhattan, connecting to major airports. While fares have not been disclosed, they are expected to be cheaper than the current Blade helicopter service between Manhattan and JFK.

The planned routes will connect Manhattan with JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports, potentially reducing travel times from over an hour by taxi to just 5-15 minutes.

Since its inception in 2020, Archer has secured a 1 billion USD eVTOL deal with United Airlines and expanded partnerships with Japan Airlines and Stellantis. The company recently raised 1 billion USD in funding, boosting its position in the commercial and military aviation sectors.

Archer is preparing commercial air taxi services for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification is required for this goal, and the company has already obtained some operational and maintenance approvals.
