Big Promises, Bigger Delay—Tesla Semi Revives Hopes But at a Steep Price

On Monday, electric vehicle news outlet Electrek reported that Tesla unveiled the latest updates on its semi electric truck factory in Nevada, announcing mass production of the electric Semi truck slated for 2026. The Tesla Semi, originally scheduled to begin production in 2019, has faced multiple delays but is now showing signs of ramping up to full-scale manufacturing.

For the past two years, Tesla has been constructing a new facility adjacent to Gigafactory Nevada. The company has completed the factory build-out and is now installing production lines.

While Tesla previously aimed for high-volume production by 2025, the current plan is to initiate production by year-end and significantly expand operations next year. The automaker is targeting an annual output of 50,000 Semi trucks.

Ryder, an early customer partner in Tesla’s semi truck program, reported that prices have increased substantially due to additional delays. The logistics company now expects to receive its first vehicles in the latter half of 2026. As a result of the price hikes, Ryder has scaled back its pilot program from 42 trucks to 18 units.
