Lamborghini Once Made a Pickup Truck—And It Had a V12

When most people think of Lamborghini, the first image that comes to mind is typically a low, wide supercar. However, the brand’s history includes one notable exception: a pickup truck known as the LM002. It was produced between 1986 and 1992 in a limited run of just 300 units. Powered by a 5.2-liter V12 engine, the LM002 was not just an off-roader but also a precursor to the modern super SUV segment.

The LM002’s design featured a bold, near-vertical front end, air intakes inspired by military equipment, and a spare tire mounted on a red carpet in the trunk. This model showcased Lamborghini’s distinct approach to style and innovative design. However, it was ahead of its time, and many consumers found it too unconventional for its era.

V12-Powered Pickup: A Masterpiece Beyond Utility

The standout feature of the LM002 is its engine—a 5.2-liter V12 taken from the Lamborghini Countach. With a target top speed of 229 km/h (142 mph), the LM002 delivered exceptional performance for an SUV in the 1980s. However, adjustments to the intake and exhaust systems for off-road capability and fuel compatibility resulted in slightly lower output than the Countach.

The powertrain comprises a 5-speed manual transmission, six Weber carburetors, and a cyclone air filter system adapted from military-grade equipment. These components were designed for off-road performance and reflect Lamborghini’s focus on overstated practicality.

The LM002 features electric windows, non-functional air conditioning, and a unique 6-passenger seating arrangement. The rear seats face each other, adding a military-style touch and reinforcing the vehicle’s distinctive character.

Lamborghini’s Visionary Move: The Birth of the Super SUV

Due to its military-inspired details, there were rumors that Lamborghini developed the LM002 as a military project. While the vehicle included an electrical socket for connecting a field radio, the claim that it was used for military purposes is unlikely. The vehicle’s lavish specifications made it difficult for the U.S. government and the Department of Defense to adopt.

At the time, Ferrari had no interest in SUVs, but Lamborghini’s introduction of the high-performance, all-wheel-drive utility vehicle with the LM002 made it the “first true super SUV.” Modern models like the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, and Aston Martin DBX trace their roots to this vehicle.

However, the high production cost, maintenance expenses, and unusual concept made the LM002 a challenging choice for many buyers. One Florida customer even had to purchase the LM002 to buy the 25th-anniversary edition of the Lamborghini Countach, highlighting inventory challenges at the time.

Today, the LM002 is recognized as one of Lamborghini’s most experimental and pure models. Even now, the 12-cylinder, all-wheel-drive pickup remains a legend in the automotive world. The title of the ultimate pickup truck is not an exaggeration.
