Hyundai Motor Company is set to compete in the “Racing Car & Slick Tire Class” at the upcoming Attack Tsukuba 2025 event on Saturday. The automaker will field its Ioniq 5 N TA (Time Attack) Spec at Japan’s Tsukuba Circuit Course 2000.
The Tsukuba Circuit, situated an hour north of Tokyo, has been the iconic venue for the Attack Tsukuba Time Attack racing competition since 1994. Unlike traditional multi-car races, time attack events determine rankings based on the fastest lap times each competitor achieves.
The Ioniq 5 N TA Spec is a purpose-built racer that retains the core body and motor of the production model but incorporates key modifications to elevate its performance on the track. Through advanced software tuning, the rear motor’s output has been increased by 37 PS, pushing the total power to an impressive 687 PS. The car also has cutting-edge shock absorbers, motorsport-grade brakes, and Yokohama ADVAN 005 slick tires mounted on 18-inch rims. A custom high-downforce aerodynamic package further enhances its track capability.
This isn’t Hyundai’s first time making waves in motorsports with the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec. In June 2024, the car claimed a class victory at the prestigious Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, setting a new electric modified car record of 9 minutes and 30.852 seconds.
Hyundai has partnered with Japanese racing sensation Nobuteru Taniguchi to pilot the Ioniq 5 N TA Spec for the Attack Tsukuba event. Taniguchi brings a wealth of experience, having set numerous records in Super GT and various Japanese motorsport competitions. His impressive resume includes four records at Attack Tsukuba.
Hyundai’s participation in Attack Tsukuba 2025 is more than just a bid to break its EV record. It is a strategic move to showcase the company’s technological prowess to the Japanese market and a global audience.
A Hyundai spokesperson emphasized that the event presents a prime opportunity for Hyundai to showcase its cutting-edge technology to Japanese automotive enthusiasts. They added that Hyundai N will continue to push boundaries and embrace new challenges in motorsport.
