On Monday, Electrek reported that New York State will allocate an additional 30 million USD in subsidies for electric vehicle purchases.
Through the Drive Clean Rebate program, buyers receive an immediate discount off the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) when purchasing an electric vehicle. The rebate is available across all 62 counties in the state. Electric cars with over 200 miles are eligible for a 2,000 USD rebate, while models with a range of 40 to 199 miles qualify for a 1,000 USD rebate.
Since its launch in 2017, the program has provided over 190,000 rebates, with more than 280,000 electric vehicles currently on New York’s roads. Doreen Harris, CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), stated that the transition to electric vehicles can reduce fuel and maintenance costs while enhancing the purchasing power of New York residents.
Additionally, New York has increased the grant for installing Level 2 chargers from 2,000 to 3,000 USD, with up to 4,000 USD available for installations in low-income areas. There are over 17,000 public chargers installed in New York State, the second-highest number after California.
New York’s expansion of electric vehicle subsidies and strengthening of charging infrastructure are crucial steps in accelerating the development of a sustainable transportation system. These initiatives are expected to promote the transition to clean energy and further the adoption of electric vehicles.
