BYD’s Ocean Series Waves In: 570 km Range and Up to 530 Horsepower

BYD unveiled five new models from its Ocean Series at Auto Shanghai 2025, marking their global debut. The automaker showcased a concept car reflecting its new design direction and introduced two models with diverse powertrain options.

The Ocean-S concept car led the charge, offering a preview of BYD’s global Ocean lineup design. It embodies three key principles: vibrancy, diversity, and nature. By combining existing Ocean Series elements with advanced technology, BYD crafted a forward-looking style inspired by the sea’s boundaries, waves, and spirit.

The concept’s design features elongated proportions that exude elegance. Sleek, flowing curves throughout the body create a unique sense of dynamism. The front end sports a more aggressive look, enhancing aerodynamics and reducing drag.

The Ocean-S concept offers a peek into the future, while BYD also unveiled the production-ready Seal and Sealion 06 series. These models, marked by the 06 suffix, aim to enhance the practicality of BYD’s sedan and SUV lineups.

Both the Seal 06 and Sealion 06 boast larger dimensions compared to their predecessors. The designs emphasize volume, with a cohesive look from front to rear. Layered daytime running lights in the headlamps create a distinctive signature, while the rear end maintains this design language for a unified appearance.

Inside, the increased dimensions translate to impressive spaciousness. The expanded design provides ample room in both rows, with the second row offering particularly generous accommodations. Tall adults find plenty of knee and headroom in the back seats.

The Seal and Sealion 06 series take a more streamlined approach to interior design. The dashboard layout features advanced elements without clutter. A notable improvement comes with the repositioned storage space above the center console, enhancing overall usability.

BYD offers two powertrain options for each of the Seal and Sealion 06 models. The vehicles feature the latest fifth-generation DM-I technology, promising improved performance and range. The outgoing DM-I system paired a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor, delivering 197 horsepower and up to 115 km (71 miles) of electric-only range (based on Chinese testing standards).

The electric vehicle version utilizes the e-Platform 3.0 Evo, expected to maximize the output of more powerful electric motors. The most widely used powertrain configuration features dual motors, delivering a peak output of 530 horsepower. Additionally, the 82.5 kWh LFP blade battery allows for a range (WLTP) of 570 km (about 354 miles).

The Seal 06 EV is priced between 120,000 to 150,000 CNY (approximately 23,660 to 29,570 USD), the Sealion 06 EV between 160,000 to 200,000 CNY (approximately 31,540 to 39,430 USD), and the Sealion 06 DM-I Touring between 120,000 to 150,000 CNY (approximately 23,660 to 29,570 USD).
