Level 3, 100 Launches, and a Tesla Showdown — Inside Auto Shanghai 2025

Auto Shanghai 2025 will be held from April 23 to May 2. More than 70 auto brands will participate in the event, introducing over 100 new models.

Among Chinese companies, BYD and Geely are expected to be the main players, while foreign brands such as Volkswagen, Nissan, Toyota, and General Motors-owned Cadillac are expected to attract attention. Hyundai and Kia will not be participating this time.

After years of price wars, the Chinese auto market is now emerging as a front line for next-generation autonomous driving technology. However, after a fatal accident involving Xiaomi’s SU7 electric vehicle in March, the Chinese government tightened regulations by banning automakers from using the terms Smart Driving or Autonomous Driving when promoting driver assistance features. As a result, automakers participating in the Shanghai Motor Show have had to revise some of their plans to unveil next-generation driver assistance systems (ADAS).

At this motor show, Geely will unveil its first model equipped with Level 3 driver assistance technology for its electric vehicle brand ZEEKR. Level 3 technology allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel on highways and other areas, but requires continuous monitoring of road conditions. However, Geely explained in its official press conference that it will focus on hybrid models and battery technology.

Meanwhile, the Auto Shanghai 2025 is expected to feature around 10 electric crossover models that can directly compete with the Tesla Model Y. Tesla has recently shown a decline in its global market share, so it is expected to face challenges due to intensifying competition at this motor show. Competitors to the Model Y include the Xpeng G6 and ZEEKR E6, which feature affordable prices, fast charging technology, advanced driver assistance systems, and advanced infotainment features.

Instead of announcing the crossover YU7, which some analysts had expected, Xiaomi plans to focus on displaying its existing SU7 model at this motor show.
