China’s Most Controversial Mini Car Just Got a Futuristic Makeover

Chinese automaker Chery Automobile is reviving its iconic QQ compact car, which was first introduced in 2003. Known for affordability and practicality, the original QQ became an immediate hit domestically, selling over 40,000 units during its launch year. With some models priced as low as around $4,000 (29,900 CNY), the QQ quickly carved out a strong niche among budget-conscious buyers.

However, QQ’s initial success was not without controversy. General Motors accused Chery of copying its Daewoo Matiz, pointing to striking similarities in design, dimensions, and interior details. GM even pursued litigation in China, though the companies reportedly settled the matter out of court.

Chery Reveals Futuristic Concept for QQ Revival

The original QQ had a 0.8-liter, three-cylinder engine producing 51 horsepower, with an optional 1.1-liter version delivering 67 horsepower. It was marketed as a fuel-efficient and affordable urban commuter.

After discontinuing the QQ in 2014 due to declining sales, Chery has now announced its return. The company unveiled images of a concept vehicle that will guide the new QQ’s design. Given the original’s popularity among young professionals, anticipation is high for what this modern version will bring. The design of the concept car has been updated with modern styling cues.

The concept points toward an electric powertrain. It features a closed-off grille, sleek headlamps with a pixelated pattern, and an illuminated ‘Qq’ logo. The overall shape prioritizes aerodynamics with flowing lines and a smooth profile.

Aerodynamic Styling Aims for China’s Small EV Segment

While the front retains a boxy stance, the side and rooflines are sculpted to enhance airflow. The side pillars are integrated with the windshield, creating a clean, streamlined aesthetic. Unique flat wheels and flush body panels complement the car’s modern look, with the ‘Qq’ logo also appearing on the C-pillar.

Design elements at the rear mirror the front, including pixel-style taillights and glossy black trim. The vertical rear emphasizes interior space and includes a high-mounted auxiliary brake light.

This bold redesign is expected to influence the final production model closely. With China’s small EV market growing rapidly and domestic automakers targeting international expansion, the revived QQ could become a key player. Industry observers are watching closely to see whether it will replicate the original’s disruptive pricing and appeal to a new generation of city drivers. After nearly a decade, QQ is making a comeback and is expected to target the Chinese market in line with the growth of the domestic small EV segment.
