Mazda recently announced its upcoming CX-6e model, which was developed in partnership with China’s Changan Automobile. This launch signifies Mazda’s serious push into the European market, with plans to badge the vehicle as the EZ-6 for the Chinese market.

The CX-6e will be offered as both a pure electric vehicle (EV) and a range-extender plug-in hybrid, broadening consumer options. Meanwhile, recent sightings of the CX-6e undergoing testing have sparked renewed public interest in the model.

Production Version of the Arata Concept

Unveiled at last year’s Beijing Auto Show, the CX-6e is slightly larger than the CX-5, positioning it strategically in Mazda’s lineup. The CX-6e shares its underpinnings with Changan’s EPA1 platform, also used in the Deepal S07. Given this, the CX-6e is expected to have similar dimensions to the Deepal S07, measuring approximately 4,750 mm (187 in) in length with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114 in).

The front end of the spotted CX-6e showcases Mazda’s signature wing-shaped grille, which resembles the Polestar 3. Notable features include slim, sharp LED headlights and an aggressive bumper with prominent air intakes. The side profile exudes a sporty image reminiscent of a coupe-like SUV design.

Expanding EV Lineup for the Chinese Market

With the CX-6e, Mazda aims to expand its EV portfolio, specifically targeting the rapidly growing Chinese market. The automaker is also developing the third-generation CX-5, featuring Mazda’s in-house hybrid powertrain and promising competitive performance.

While interior images of the Arata concept, which will form the basis of the CX-6e, haven’t been released, some design elements will likely be borrowed from the previously revealed 6e sedan. Specific details remain limited, but the CX-6e is expected to offer a 68.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery or an 80 kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery.

Following Global Trends: Partnering with Chinese Automakers

Many automakers are strengthening their competitiveness through partnerships with Chinese brands. Global players like Volkswagen and Polestar have shown significant growth through such collaborations. Mazda’s partnership with Changan Automobile aims to enhance its competitiveness in European and global markets by leveraging both companies’ technological strengths.

Industry observers are watching closely to see if Mazda can achieve meaningful results in the global market through this strategy. The CX-6e could be a pivotal model in Mazda’s electrification transition, making it a focal point for industry watchers and consumers.
