The automotive industry watches closely as BMW unveils its next-generation electric SUV, the iX3. This is more than just another new model; it’s a strategic vehicle that marks the debut of BMW’s next-generation platform, the Neue Klasse. The iX3 will debut at the International Mobility Show (IAA Mobility) in Munich this September.

BMW has integrated its groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) platform, the Neue Klasse, into the iX3. This new platform boosts driving range by approximately 30% compared to previous models and enables ultra-fast charging with an 800V system.

The exterior design marks a bold shift from previous models. Inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, the front kidney grille updates the classic 2002 BMW design with a compact and powerful look.

Inside, the Panoramic Vision display stretches across the windshield, offering a high-tech and immersive driving experience.

The vehicle’s energy efficiency has been significantly improved. BMW has optimized internal wiring and introduced a new drive motor and chassis control system.

High-density cylindrical batteries extend range and improve safety. BMW will roll them out across its future EV lineup.

The new iX3 marks BMW’s full-scale entry into the electrification era. From 2025, the company plans to roll out a diverse range of vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform.

This lineup will encompass over 40 models, spanning electric vehicles, hybrids, and internal combustion engines.

At a recent annual meeting, BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse emphasized that the Neue Klasse isn’t just a platform; it’s the culmination of technology that embodies BMW’s future strategy.

He added that this platform is set to significantly improve vehicle performance, battery systems, and in-car digital features.

In South Africa, BMW is finalizing the development of an electric sedan built on the same platform and preparing for the iX3 production model.

This model is expected to be the electric successor to the next-generation 3 Series, likely to be called the i3.

Investing Through Crisis: BMW’s Counteroffensive Begins

BMW has invested 18 billion EUR (approximately $20 billion) in the Neue Klasse project.

This substantial outlay contributed to a 36.9% drop in net profit last year, down to 7.68 billion EUR (around $8.3 billion), amid weakened demand in China and supply chain issues.

Despite these setbacks, BMW is gaining traction in the EV market. The company sold 2,450,000 vehicles globally last year, including 426,000 electric vehicles — a 13.5% increase from the previous year.

EVs now account for 17.4% of total BMW sales. Starting in 2025, BMW aims to reduce capital expenditures while focusing on profitability. The iX3 is expected to play a central role in this strategy.

The iX3 will be officially unveiled at the Munich Mobility Show on September 9. Production will begin later this year at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary.
