European automakers are closely watching BYD as it prepares to introduce its budget-friendly electric vehicle (EV), the Dolphin Surf, to Europe.

Known as the Seagull in China, the model drew attention for its $10,000 price tag.

Last November, it surpassed the Tesla Model Y and became China’s best-selling EV.

BYD plans to launch the Dolphin Surf in Europe by the end of the year. The company is confident it can keep its title as the most affordable EV while meeting European safety standards.

The Dolphin Surf combines affordability with practical technology. It has BYD’s in-house batteries in 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, offering CLTC-rated ranges of 305 km (190 miles) and 405 km (252 miles), respectively.

The interior includes a 10.1-inch rotating center display and a 5-inch digital instrument cluster. It also features Android Auto support and wireless charging.

One key highlight is BYD’s “God’s Eye” driver assistance system. BYD announced earlier this year that this system will be added to 21 models, including the Dolphin Surf, at no additional cost, and it raised consumer expectations.

European EV market braces for impact

BYD sells five models in Europe but plans to expand its lineup to 13 within 18 months, signaling an aggressive market strategy.

BYD is expanding its dealer network in the UK from 62 to 120 locations.

Stella Li, BYD’s Vice President for Europe, said that the Dolphin Surf will be recognized as Europe’s most efficient and valuable electric vehicle.

Industry experts expect the Dolphin Surf to be priced below £20,000 (approximately $29,000), and it can potentially disrupt the competitive European EV market.

From Chinese Success to Global Expansion

The Dolphin Surf has already performed well in China. After its launch, it quickly gained popularity, earning the nickname “ultimate value champion,” and even outsold the Tesla Model Y.

As European governments support EV adoption, the Dolphin Surf is well-placed to become a leading option for affordable electric cars in the region.

Industry watchers are watching BYD closely to see how much market share it can claim in Europe with this model.
