Leaked Video Fuels Rumors of Illegal North Korean Labor in Russia

Despite multiple UN Security Council sanctions against North Korea, individuals suspected to be North Korean workers were observed at a warehouse of a Russian e-commerce company.

On Tuesday, the independent Russian news outlet Moscow Times reported that leaked footage from a Wildberries warehouse in the Moscow region had surfaced. The video was reportedly first shared in an employee group chat.

Wildberries, founded by ethnic Korean Tatyana Kim, stated it is running a pilot project to employ foreign workers. The company has not commented on whether the workers in the footage are North Korean.

In 2017, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 2375, prohibiting member states from employing North Korean workers and mandating the repatriation of all existing overseas workers by the end of 2019.

Russia claimed in early 2020 that repatriation was challenging due to “limited transportation options.” Since then, multiple instances have suggested North Korean personnel remain active in the country.
