Chinese automaker GAC Trumpchi launched its new mid-to-large SUV, the S7, entering a highly competitive market.

It features luxurious Range Rover-inspired styling and employs a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system designed to deliver exceptional fuel economy and performance.

According to CLTC standards, the vehicle achieves a combined fuel economy of 17.5 km/L. It can travel up to 1,150 km (715 miles) on a single charge, challenging established models like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.

The driver’s cockpit includes a 27-inch high-resolution head-up display (HUD), an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen. The second row features a 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted screen, allowing rear-seat passengers to enjoy a high-quality entertainment experience.

A premium audio system comprising 22 high-quality speakers delivers a theater-like acoustic environment.

The S7’s plug-in hybrid powertrain offers outstanding fuel economy and dynamic performance.

The front-wheel-drive version pairs a 170 kW (228 horsepower) electric motor with a 118 kW (158 horsepower) 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. The all-wheel-drive model adds an 80 kW (107 horsepower) rear electric motor for enhanced driving capabilities.

This model has a 36.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Its total driving range is 1,150 km (715 miles) for the FWD model and 1,020 km (634 miles) for the AWD variant. Pure electric mode offers up to 205 km (127 miles) for the FWD and 180 km (112 miles) for the AWD models.

Rapid charging increases battery levels from 30% to 80% in just 17 minutes. The WLTC-rated fuel economy is a class-leading 17.5 km/L (41.2 mpg).

The S7 also incorporates an advanced L2++ driver-assistance system utilizing variable-focus LiDAR, 11 high-resolution cameras, three millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. This system enhances safety and semi-autonomous driving capabilities, providing refined autonomous assistance in highway and urban settings.

GAC Trumpchi set competitive pricing for the S7, with the base model starting at 209,800 CNY (approximately $31,500) and the top model priced at 249,800 CNY (approximately $37,500).

Industry observers consider the S7’s pricing highly competitive, given its upscale design, advanced features, and impressive fuel efficiency.

While initially targeted at the Chinese domestic market, GAC Trumpchi is considering expanding globally.
