Kia is launching its smart charging and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services in select European and American regions.

These innovative services will allow electric vehicle (EV) owners to automatically charge their vehicles during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower. Additionally, customers will be able to utilize excess power for their home energy needs or potentially sell it back to the grid in the future, creating new opportunities for cost savings.

On Wednesday, Kia announced it would begin service commercialization by launching smart charging in the Netherlands and V2H emergency power services in the U.S.

The smart charging service in the Netherlands is designed to optimize both charging times and costs. When customers plug in their EVs, the system automatically monitors hourly electricity rate fluctuations and begins charging when rates are most favorable.

Customers can manage their charging costs effectively through the Kia Smart Charge mobile app, which provides real-time updates on charging levels and energy cost savings.

Kia is also considering introducing a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) service. This service would allow customers to sell surplus energy from their EVs back to the power grid, complementing the smart charging service.

In the United States, Kia’s V2H emergency power service will be available in seven states, including California. This cutting-edge technology allows EV owners to use their vehicles as a home power source.

Customers can significantly reduce their electricity bills by charging their EVs during low-rate periods and using the stored energy at home during peak hours. This service is especially valuable during power outages or other emergencies, as homeowners can tap into their EV’s battery to power essential household items.

Considering regional conditions and requirements, Hyundai Motor Group, Kia’s parent company, plans to expand these smart charging and V2H emergency power services to other key global markets. Hyundai will launch its own version of these services within the year.

A Hyundai spokesperson stated, “We have introduced these services to revolutionize the EV ownership experience and usher in a new era of mobility. Our commitment to developing cutting-edge technologies that enhance people’s lives remains unwavering.”
