Self-Driving Cars May Save Lives — Waymo’s Study Makes the Case

A May 2 report from GigaGen revealed Waymo’s autonomous vehicles are up to 25 times safer for pedestrians and cyclists than human-driven cars, highlighting a major leap in road safety.

Waymo’s analysis of 56.7 million miles of driving data showed self-driving cars cut pedestrian collisions by 92% and cyclist accidents by 82%. Intersection crashes dropped 96%, and serious injuries fell by 85%, underscoring the technology’s role in protecting vulnerable road users.

Waymo Chief Safety Officer Mauricio Peña said the study offers strong evidence that autonomous vehicles improve road safety. The Governors Highway Safety Association backed the findings, highlighting their positive impact on pedestrian and cyclist protection.

Concrete data continues to validate the safety benefits of autonomous driving, with Waymo’s research seen as a potential turning point. Industry experts are monitoring whether these findings will accelerate the global adoption of self-driving technology.
