Hyundai Motor Group announced on Friday that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had awarded 12 of its models top safety ratings in its latest crash tests, the highest among global automakers. The company stated that the results, released on Thursday, reflect its vehicle safety performance.

In the evaluation, Hyundai Motor Group vehicles received 11 Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) ratings and one Top Safety Pick (TSP) rating. Hyundai and Kia ranked second and seventh overall, respectively, while Genesis secured the top spot among luxury brands.

Five Hyundai models—the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona, Tucson, and Santa Fe—received the TSP+ rating. Genesis models receiving the designation included the GV60, GV70, Electrified GV70, and GV80. Kia’s EV9 and Telluride also earned TSP+ ratings. The Genesis G90 was recognized with a TSP rating.

Since 2021, the Tucson, GV70, and GV80 have maintained their TSP+ ratings for five consecutive years, and the Telluride has received either a TSP+ or TSP designation for seven consecutive years.

Hyundai Motor Group noted that this recognition is significant, as IIHS has tightened its rear passenger safety evaluation criteria. Due to these stricter standards, the number of vehicles earning TSP+ or TSP ratings dropped from 71 to 48 this year, including 36 TSP+ and 12 TSP models.

IIHS revised its frontal crash evaluations by adding test dummies representing small-statured women or 12-year-old children in the rear seat. This change better simulates the impacts rear-seat passengers may experience in actual collisions.

IIHS President David Harkey said that this year’s vehicles would be the top choices for consumers seeking family cars with the highest level of safety.

A Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson said the company would continue to strive to provide customers with vehicles that meet global standards for safety and quality.
