BYD, the automaker that shook up the EV market, is back in the spotlight with its new mid-size electric sedan, the e7. Known for aggressive pricing, BYD has quickly expanded its global EV market share, and the e7 is expected to generate strong interest.
Officially classified as a mid-size electric sedan, the BYD e7 was registered with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in January 2024, signaling it is nearing launch. The vehicle is 4,780 mm (188.2 in) long, 1,900 mm (74.8 in) wide, 1,515 mm (59.6 in) high, and has a wheelbase of 2,820 mm (111 in). It’s fully qualified as a standard mid-size sedan.

Pricing Strategy: Will BYD Continue to Undercut Rivals?
The e7 has a 100 kW electric motor with a top speed of around 150 km/h (93 mph). Rather than focusing on high performance, the car emphasizes everyday usability and efficiency.
The big question is pricing. The earlier e2 Glory Edition launched in China for 89,800 CNY (approximately $13,000). Though pricing for the e7 is not yet confirmed, experts expect BYD to maintain its aggressive pricing. If it launches around a similar price point, the e7 could shake up the global EV market.
The e7 is positioned as a budget-friendly alternative to BYD’s Ocean series, offering more size and space. This move could reshape the entry-level electric sedan segment. The final price will likely influence the brand and the wider EV industry.

Solid Specs with Market Potential
Two battery options will be available: 48 kWh and 57.6 kWh. These offer estimated ranges of 450 km (280 miles) and 520 km (323 miles), respectively, under China’s CLTC standard. EPA-rated ranges will be lower, but the e7 still secures enough real-world range for everyday driving. Despite being larger than the e2, it maintains strong range competitiveness.
BYD plans to equip the e7 with its proprietary battery technology, including the blade battery system, emphasizing safety and energy efficiency. This reinforces that the e7 is a low-cost model and offers strong practical value.
Although BYD has not yet announced the official release date or pricing, the model appears close to mass production. Given BYD’s aggressive push into overseas markets, global availability is not out of the question. The e7 could gain significant attention in the EV market if released at a competitive price.
