Is Suzuki’s eWX the Electric Successor to the Iconic Hustler?

Suzuki is shifting its focus back to the mini SUV market by unveiling the Jimny Nomad model in January 2025. However, before this, the Hustler—Suzuki’s 5-door mini SUV—had already established itself as a popular choice with its round headlights, strong angular design, and high ground clearance. Known for its solid driving performance, the Hustler has garnered a dedicated following. There is strong speculation that the Suzuki eWX electric concept car, unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, could take over as the next-generation Hustler. Described by Suzuki as a model that combines the practicality of a mini vehicle with the cutting-edge sensibility of an EV, the eWX could be the future of Suzuki’s mini SUV lineup.

How Does the Suzuki eWX Compare to the Hustler?

The eWX measures 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) in length, 1,475 mm (58.1 inches) in width, and 1,620 mm (63.8 inches) in height—making it a similar size to the current 2nd generation Hustler, though it sits slightly lower. Its square body and straight lines reflect the Hustler’s design, while modern details distinguish it as an electric vehicle. The front design of the eWX features a simple grille with just the Suzuki emblem and ㄷ-shaped headlights, providing a stark contrast to the more playful, cute atmosphere of the Hustler. In contrast, the eWX adopts a futuristic look with minimal chrome and clean lines, fully embracing the EV aesthetic.

Electric Powertrain and Driving Range

One of the standout features of the Suzuki eWX is its electric powertrain. While the specific details of the powertrain haven’t been disclosed, the driving range of approximately 230 km (143 miles) on a full charge has been confirmed. This is a significant leap over the Nissan Sakura, which offers a range of 180 km (112 miles). The eWX’s driving range is expected to provide ample coverage for city dwellers and those who use the vehicle primarily for short urban drives, making it a practical option for the electric mini SUV market.

Interior Design: A Modern Leap Forward

The eWX is taking a major step forward from the Hustler by embracing a more futuristic approach. The steering wheel design has been altered from the traditional circular shape to a slightly rounded square, offering a more contemporary feel. The center panel now features a large display that stretches across the dashboard, providing essential vehicle information and functioning as a control panel for the car’s features.

The interior space remains spacious, much like the Hustler, but with a stronger focus on practicality. The seats are designed for comfort, featuring bright yellow upholstery and independent headrests for each seat. The addition of sofa-like cushions aims to provide a more comfortable ride, even on longer journeys, making the eWX a practical choice for a broader range of users.

eWX: A Practical Electric Vehicle for the Future

Suzuki emphasizes that the eWX is not just a design concept but a practical EV model for everyday use. With a design rooted in the familiar style of the Hustler, the eWX represents the next-generation mini SUV with advanced EV technology and modern design, all while retaining the familiarity and practicality that made the Hustler popular. As Suzuki moves forward, the eWX may be the model that ushers in a new era for Suzuki’s mini SUV lineup, blending sustainability and style for the electric future.
