Nissan’s New Elgrand Looks More Like a Spaceship Than a Minivan

Nissan revealed the first teaser image of its next-generation flagship minivan, the Elgrand, which is set to debut in late 2025. The fourth-generation Elgrand will be built based on Nissan’s future concept car, the Hyper Tourer, and is expected to feature a revolutionary design that breaks all conventional ideas of a minivan.

The officially released image showcases a strikingly thin pixel-lit strip headlight that spans the entire front, with a backlit Nissan logo in the center. The lower section features a large air intake and splitter-style bumper details that leave a strong impression. This design is so bold that it hardly fits the typical minivan category; it delivers a true design shock.

Hyper Tourer Concept
Overwhelmed by Pixel Headlamps

The exterior of the new Elgrand is a refined version of the 2023 Hyper Tourer concept, closely resembling a production model. Most of the design elements are directly carried over from the concept, with the front end standing out for its digitalized appearance, almost resembling a single LED panel rather than a traditional front face. The smooth, grille-less front maximizes its futuristic appeal.

The front lamps are expected to feature Nissan’s newly developed Pixel Head Optic technology. A thin strip extending across the vehicle’s width integrates the headlights and daytime running lights. This glowing strip creates visual continuity even when viewed from the side. The rear emphasizes luxury with full-width tail lamps and a smooth roofline.

The side design maintains the minivan’s signature sliding doors and incorporates an aerodynamic roof spoiler, wheel design, and sculpted fender lines that strike a perfect balance. This reflects Nissan’s ambition to elevate the vehicle from a family car to a luxury, chauffeur-driven minivan.

Self-Charging Hybrid Anticipates Major Impact in Minivan Market

The next-generation Elgrand features Nissan’s latest third-generation e-Power self-charging hybrid system. The 1.5L gasoline engine generates electricity solely, with the motor handling actual propulsion in a series configuration. Nissan emphasizes that this system represents a significant evolution in quietness and fuel efficiency, targeting driving dynamics and fuel economy comparable to EVs.

While the interior has not yet been revealed, the flagship model is expected to have top-tier features, like independent four-seat configurations, a panoramic display, and the latest version of ProPILOT. The seats are designed to be even more spacious than first-class airplane seats, clearly reflecting a focus on the premium market and targeting VIP customers. This showcases the Elgrand’s emphasis on luxury and exclusivity. This model provides a level of space and comfort beyond what is usually expected from a minivan.

Currently, the Kia Carnival dominates the minivan market, but the launch of the Elgrand could completely change the market dynamics. With its premium design, hybrid powertrain, and unique interior space, this model is expected to tap into the premium minivan demand that the Carnival has yet to meet. It could become a decisive card for Nissan’s re-entry into the minivan market.
