Mercedes-Benz unveiled plans for a compact electric SUV, commonly called the Baby G-Wagon. This SUV carries the iconic design of the G-Class. While its exterior closely resembles the real G-Wagon, the price and performance offer a completely different level of accessibility.

According to a recent report by British automotive publication Autocar, the Baby G is currently under development and slated for a 2027 launch.

Blending Classic Design with Cutting-Edge Technology

Mercedes-Benz officially confirmed this model’s existence, revealing plans to develop a smaller G-Class.

The Baby G will inherit the G-Class’s distinctive boxy silhouette and robust appearance.

The exterior closely resembles the G 580 EQ Technology in recent unofficial renderings. It is expected to feature a 2-door configuration instead of the traditional 4-door setup, and the model name is likely to use a lowercase g.

The G-Class’s body structure will not follow the traditional ladder frame design but will adopt the monocoque (integrated body) platform used in the C-Class sedan and GLC SUV.

The vehicle will feature an 800-volt electrical architecture and Mercedes’ latest fifth-generation battery system. Its estimated driving range will exceed 700 km (434 miles).

Industry experts suggest that it could offer the longest driving range among current electric SUVs. The charging speed is also expected to improve significantly, with estimates indicating it could charge up to 265 km (164 miles) in just 5 minutes.

Based on this, industry forecasts that the total driving range could reach 1,200 km (746 miles).

Baby G Breaks Down The Price Barrier

The expected starting price of the Baby G is around 55,000 to 65,000 USD.

This price range makes it competitive with the Land Rover Defender X 2-door. Mercedes-Benz has lowered the entry barrier while maintaining its brand’s luxury image, targeting those who have wanted a G-Class but couldn’t afford it.

It will be interesting to see whether this model, combining off-road capabilities with electric vehicle technology, can attract a distinct consumer group separate from the typical urban SUV market.
