Rumors of an expansion of Toyota’s GR lineup are persistent. The return of the Celica and MR2 to the next-generation Supra and even the GR supercar have been discussed. While many of these vehicles will likely retain their internal combustion engines, one digital artist has provided a new perspective.

The bZ86, unveiled by digital artist Theophilus Chin, is an electric version of Toyota’s GR86. It is a concept that explores the brand’s future electrification strategy and the harmony of sports cars.

The bZ86: A Modern Take on the GR86 Legacy

The bZ86 maintains the basic silhouette of the GR86, but its design has been thoroughly updated to reflect its electric nature. The front end has been reworked into a more futuristic look, drawing inspiration from the Toyota CH-R+ and the modified bZ4X.

The sharp, hammerhead-style front nose, aggressive LED headlights, and large air intakes create a bold presence. The side profile emphasizes sportiness with a strong character line and a dynamic two-tone color scheme. The large charging port on the front fender clearly signals that this is an all-electric vehicle.

At the rear, the design echoes elements of the CH-R+ crossover, with full-width LED taillights and a coupe-like roofline that blends seamlessly. The diffuser and lower bumper add a sense of dynamism, though plastic cladding may be a divisive design choice.

Could the Toyota bZ86 Become a Reality?

While the bZ86 is currently just a digital concept, it suggests intriguing possibilities. If Toyota were to develop it, the car would likely feature the dual-motor system used in the CH-R+, delivering up to 338 horsepower (252 kW / 343 PS). Based on WLTP estimates, it could achieve a range of over 525 km (326 miles) with a 77 kWh battery.

However, Toyota Gazoo Racing has no immediate plans to launch an electric sports car. The company is still heavily invested in its internal combustion engine sports car lineup, with future models like the Celica, MR2, GR86, and GR Supra expected to remain central to its offerings.

While the bZ86 concept is undoubtedly exciting, it seems unlikely to be mass-produced anytime soon. Given Toyota’s electrification strategy, which focuses on SUVs and family vehicles, an electric sports car could still be far off. For now, it remains a bold and fascinating vision for the future of Toyota’s GR lineup.
