Mazda has announced a full redesign of its popular CX-5 SUV, marking the first complete model change in eight years. Since its debut in 2012, the CX-5 has remained one of Mazda’s best-selling models worldwide, with the second-generation version launched in 2017 maintaining strong sales through a series of minor updates.

The redesigned CX-5 is expected to introduce major upgrades in styling, interior space, and powertrain options, positioning it more competitively in the crowded SUV market. Recently, KOLESA.RU released renderings of the new model, offering a glimpse at what to expect from Mazda’s latest flagship SUV.

Sportier Styling and a Larger Footprint

The new CX-5 will feature a sharper, more aggressive exterior design. The front grille will adopt a blacked-out look, seamlessly integrated with slim, L-shaped dual LED daytime running lights. These larger running lights enhance visibility during nighttime driving while contributing to the SUV’s modern, high-tech appearance.

The side profile is expected to maintain Mazda’s signature clean lines. While some reports suggested that the new CX-5 would feature flush-mounted doors, sources now indicate that Mazda will stick with a more traditional design. However, adding a chrome garnish on the rear quarter window will provide a more upscale touch.

Significant changes are also coming to the rear. A new roof spoiler and twin-ring LED taillights connected by a horizontal light bar will enhance the vehicle’s visual impact, especially at night.

Mazda is increasing the overall size of the CX-5 to improve interior space and road presence:

  • Length: 4,770 mm (187.8 inches) → +40 mm (1.6 inches)
  • Width: 1,910 mm (75.2 inches) → +20 mm (0.8 inches)
  • Height: 1,705 mm (67.1 inches) → +30 mm (1.2 inches)
  • Wheelbase: 2,800 mm (110.2 inches) → +100 mm (3.9 inches)

The extended wheelbase is expected to improve passenger comfort, particularly in the second row, and increase cargo capacity — addressing a key demand in the mid-sized SUV segment.

Upscale Interior with High-Tech Features

Significant changes have also occurred in interior design. The new CX-5 will offer a more luxurious interior. In particular, the instrument panel and infotainment system will be fitted with a tablet-style digital display reflecting the latest trends. A horizontal digital cluster, common in European brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, is highly likely to be installed. This is expected to provide a more intuitive user experience.

Expanded Powertrain Options — Including an EV Model

The powertrain will also be diversified. The base engine is a 2.5L inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a strong hybrid system. It is expected to generate a maximum output of 230 horsepower, and fuel efficiency will likely improve. In addition, Mazda plans to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) model in the CX-5. The EV version will be launched as a single-motor-based front-wheel drive (FWD) model and a dual-motor-equipped all-wheel drive (AWD) model. The AWD model is expected to have a maximum output of 250 horsepower.

Strengthening Mazda’s Position in the SUV Market

Mazda’s strategy with the CX-5 redesign reflects a broader shift toward electrification while maintaining the brand’s reputation for stylish design and driver-focused performance.

The redesigned CX-5 is scheduled for launch in 2025. With its upgraded design, increased interior space, and expanded powertrain options, the CX-5 is expected to reinforce Mazda’s competitive position in the mid-size SUV market. Further details, including pricing and final specifications, are expected to be released closer to the official launch date.
