In today’s market, where urban SUVs dominate, what happens when the practicality of a traditional pickup meets the quiet nature of an electric vehicle (EV)? Geely’s Riddara RD6 offers an answer with its electric pickup, combining functionality with refinement. While its design may initially seem modest, the RD6 impresses with its smooth ride and SUV-like interior features.

Built on Geely’s dedicated EV platform, the RD6 goes beyond the typical commercial vehicle, presenting itself as a potential alternative to family cars. Its exterior moves away from the bold, masculine SUV design, favoring more streamlined curves, while the interior emphasizes comfort. This approach challenges traditional pickup perceptions and aims to appeal to a broader range of customers.

At Home in the City and on the Trail

SUV-Like Comfort in a Pickup Package

The Riddara RD6 is 5,260mm (207.1 inches) long, 1,900mm (74.8 inches) wide, and 1,880mm (74.2 inches) high, positioning it as a mid-size pickup for the U.S. market. Its ground clearance of 225mm (8.9 inches) is suitable for urban driving and light off-road use. The standard version comes with front-wheel drive, while the premium trim offers all-wheel drive and a dual motor system that delivers a maximum torque of 60.6 kgf ·m (44.7 lb-ft).

The powertrain options include a 136-horsepower single motor with a 63kWh battery and a high-performance 416-horsepower model with a 73kWh battery. The standard version offers a driving range of 373 km (231 miles) (NEDC), while the higher-end model can reach up to 461 km (286 miles). DC fast charging takes about 48 minutes from 30% to 80%, and full charging via slow charging takes 8 to 9 hours, depending on the battery capacity.

The ride quality is more aligned with an SUV than a typical pickup. A monocoque body structure and coil spring suspension provide a smooth and comfortable drive even on uneven surfaces. However, the setup is focused on practical use for everyday driving rather than withstanding heavy loads for extended periods.

SUV-Grade Interior Comfort

A Potential Rival to the Upcoming Musso EV

The RD6 features a simple overall design. The tailgate supports an electric opening and closing button, but its hinge structure remains solid, reminiscent of traditional pickups. The cargo bed is1,525×1,450×540mm (60.0×57.1×21.3 inches), offering ample space for loading household appliances, with V2L functionality available in some higher trims.

The interior is comparable to that of an SUV. The base model provides features like an electric driver’s seat, PM 2.5 air purifier, electronic gear shift, and a 12.3-inch center display. Higher trims offer a 14.6-inch infotainment display and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. The rear seats feature a low beltline for improved visibility and a practical under-seat storage compartment.

These characteristics suggest that the RD6 will compete with the upcoming KGM Musso EV in global markets. As a vehicle built on BYD’s technological expertise, it will be interesting to see whether it can succeed in the competition.

Leveraging Geely’s Reputation

A Versatile Vehicle for Various Markets

The Riddara brand is expanding its presence in China and Southeast Asia, with plans for future expansion into Europe and emerging markets. Geely, the RD6 skillfully occupies the gap between SUVs and pickup trucks, leveraging its parent company’s strength and technological capabilities. Its focus on convenience over pickups’ traditional weightiness positions it as a key strategy for attracting a new consumer base.

The RD6 is an electric pickup that prioritizes daily usability over high-performance specs or advanced features. It is becoming an appealing alternative for those seeking a pickup that offers SUV-like comfort, practicality, and emotional appeal. With the RD6, Geely has successfully challenged the stereotype that pickups must be rugged and utilitarian.

As the electric pickup market becomes more competitive, pickups like the RD6, focusing on smooth performance, will likely gain ground. Geely’s strategy, centered around practical design rather than sheer performance, is gaining attention. The RD6 demonstrates that pickups can be a welcome choice in any environment.
