Xiaomi Sticks to YU7 Launch Timeline Despite Accident and Backlash

Xiaomi has denied Bloomberg‘s report that the launch of its electric SUV YU7 has been postponed. On Wednesday, Xiaomi officially stated that the vehicle is scheduled to be released in June or July of this year as originally planned.

The YU7 is a mid-sized electric SUV expected to compete with Tesla’s Model Y, a major American electric vehicle manufacturer, and is a strategic model that will strengthen Xiaomi’s presence in the global EV market. However, Xiaomi suddenly canceled its Auto Shanghai 2025 last week, raising speculation that the release schedule may have been disrupted.

Xiaomi explained that it only canceled its attendance at the Auto Shanghai 2025 and the vehicle exhibition due to CEO Lei Jun’s schedule and that there were no changes to the vehicle’s development or release plan.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi announced that a fatal accident involving its electric vehicle SU7 occurred in March. It is known that the vehicle was operating the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) at the time of the accident, and the exact cause is currently under investigation.

If the YU7 launch goes ahead as scheduled, it will be Xiaomi’s second mass-produced electric vehicle after the SU7, and it will likely solidify its position as a full-fledged electric vehicle manufacturer. However, it remains to be seen how recent issues such as the accident and exhibition cancellation will affect consumer trust.
