Toyota is preparing to launch a new wave of high-performance sports cars under its Toyota and Lexus brands.

Industry insiders report that Toyota is currently developing at least three distinct sports car models. With these vehicles, Toyota aims to attract consumers and enhance the brand’s value by introducing high-performance models across both its Toyota and Lexus lineups.

Among the highly anticipated models, the MR2 is generating significant buzz. This iconic lightweight mid-engine sports car, which once had a unique place in Toyota’s history, is set to return after a long hiatus.

The revival of the MR2 is not just a nod to nostalgia; its mid-engine layout offers a technological advantage that Toyota views as a crucial asset for communication and brand identity.

At the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota revealed plans to develop a mid-engine sports car.

At the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota unveiled the GR Yaris M Concept—an extensive redesign of the GR Yaris. This concept car features a mid-engine layout and a sports car package, hinting at the return of the MR2.

The design of the new MR2 is expected to draw inspiration from the sports car concept shown at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. Under the hood, the revived MR2 will be powered by a 2.0L turbo engine (G20E), which was also showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Meanwhile, the Celica is also stirring excitement. While Toyota already offers a range of compact sports cars, such as the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, the company recognizes the challenge of meeting the diverse demands of global markets.

The return of the Celica is now badged as the GR Celica is set to fill this gap. The new model will continue the legacy of its predecessor, which once dominated the World Rally Championship (WRC) during its prime.

With WRC regulations evolving to accommodate a broader range of body styles, the next-generation Celica could make a spectacular return to rally racing and thrill motorsport fans worldwide.

Lexus is also entering the performance car arena with a successor to the legendary LFA, the only supercar. Toyota has been developing a high-performance sports car for some time, and the new model aims to compete in events like the FIA GT3.

This high-performance car is expected to be released under both the Toyota and Lexus brands, enhancing the appeal of both names and offering an exciting driving experience for car enthusiasts.

The push for new sports cars comes in response to changing factors like stricter emissions regulations, which have led to the discontinuation of specific models. Notably, once a flagship of the GR lineup, the GR Supra has reached the end of its production run, and the GR86’s availability will also be limited.

Meanwhile, Toyota is already working on a successor to the GR Supra. Industry sources suggest the new model will be developed in collaboration with Mazda, combining technology to produce the latest Supra and Mazda RX series specs.

With exciting new releases like the MR2, GR Celica, and new high-performance models, Toyota’s direction in the sports car segment will surely capture the attention of both motorsport enthusiasts and performance car fans.
