BMW’s New Battery Plant in Germany: A Bold Move Toward Dominating the EV Market

BMW’s high-voltage battery assembly plant under construction in Ilbach-Straßkirchen, Bavaria, Germany, is progressing smoothly, according to a recent report by the German business newspaper Handelsblatt.

The project, launched in April 2024, progresses rapidly, entering the production equipment installation phase a year later. BMW accelerates preparations for full-scale operations in 2025.

BMW reports rapid construction progress since the first pillar of the central production building was erected in June 2024. By 2025, major production machinery installation will begin.

All construction companies are German, with two-thirds based in Bavaria and the rest within 100 km of the plant. This supports the local-first principle, boosting the regional economy and supply chain.

The Ilbach-Strasskirchen plant will be one of five global facilities assembling BMW’s Gen6 high-voltage batteries. It will feature cylindrical cells and a cell-to-pack structure, integrating cells directly into the battery pack to maximize energy density and efficiency.

The batteries produced will supply BMW’s German facilities, including Munich, and serve as a global supply chain hub.

BMW is building Gen6 battery assembly plants in Debrecen, Hungary; Shenyang, China; San Luis Potosí, Mexico; and near Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA, to strengthen its global electric vehicle production system..
