Honda has officially launched its first model in the next-generation electric vehicle (EV) lineup, the Honda 0 SUV, marking the brand’s bold entry into the EV era. Built on a newly developed, dedicated electric vehicle platform, the Honda 0 SUV is a key component of Honda’s 0 series. It is now in the final stages of preparation for mass production. The unveiling event captured additional attention when an F1 World Champion took the wheel to showcase the vehicle’s capabilities.

The event occurred at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan, likely partly because Honda has been supplying engines to the Red Bull F1 team since 2019. With this exciting demonstration, Honda delivered a clear message about the future of its electric vehicle lineup. It was more than just a technical showcase; it was a moment that reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to innovation and solidified its presence in the growing EV market.

The 0 Series: Starting from Scratch, a Lightweight and Smart Electric Vehicle

Honda’s new 0 series isn’t an extension of traditional internal combustion engine platforms—it’s a fresh start. The 0 SUV, designed around the “Thin, Light, Wise” principles, features ultra-thin batteries, a lightweight chassis, and a compact e-axle system. This innovative design results in a low ride height and short overhangs, setting the 0 SUV apart in both aesthetics and performance.

On the outside, the 0 SUV showcases a striking contrast between its aerodynamic front and angular rear. Inside, the focus is on maximizing visibility and space. A widescreen spans the entire dashboard, powered by a new operating system. Through over-the-air (OTA) updates, the vehicle’s autonomous driving assistance and infotainment systems will continuously improve, making the 0 SUV much more than just a means of transportation—it’s being redefined as a personalized digital mobility device for the driver.

The Honda 0 SUV: A Performance Powerhouse with Cutting-Edge Technology

The Honda 0 SUV offers an impressive performance profile, equipped with the latest 3D gyro sensor-based chassis control technology. This technology allows precise driving that adapts to the driver’s intentions, whether on smooth highways or on diverse road surfaces. The powertrain will be available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations, with outputs ranging from 241 horsepower to a maximum of 480 horsepower, providing a wide array of performance options.

This powertrain will also be available in the upcoming 0 Saloon model, further expanding Honda’s electric vehicle offerings. The 0 SUV is slated for production in 2025, with North America being the first market for its launch, followed by major global markets such as Europe and Japan. Positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, the 0 SUV will significantly impact the electric SUV segment.

The Zero Series Continues: The 0 Saloon Concept Car Unveiled

In addition to the 0 SUV, Honda has also unveiled the 0 Saloon concept car, offering a glimpse of what’s coming. After its debut at CES 2024, the concept has been refined with a more production-ready design. It features sharp nose lines and an aggressive front mask. The infinity mirror lighting from the earlier concept has been simplified, while the interior now includes a semi-circular steering wheel, three wide screens, and an angled display—replacing traditional side mirrors with cutting-edge technology.

The vehicle’s rear stands out with a large diffuser and angular overhangs, creating a silhouette rarely seen in production vehicles. While details of trunk space and exact cargo capacity have yet to be revealed, many of the concept’s design elements are expected to be incorporated into the production model. Like the 0 SUV, the interior will maintain a tech-focused design, further strengthening the brand’s unique design identity.

Strengthening the Electric Vehicle Lineup: A Vision for the Future

Honda is committed to expanding its electric vehicle lineup by 2030, beginning with the 0 series. Future models will include various options, such as compact SUVs, seven-passenger large SUVs, and small sedans, to establish a full lineup of fully electric vehicles.

The 0 series isn’t just about introducing a new model—it represents Honda’s redefined philosophy for electric vehicles. Starting from zero, the 0 series marks the first step in a fully realized electrification strategy. This initiative goes beyond mere specifications or design; it encompasses cutting-edge technology, user experience, and brand identity, establishing a comprehensive approach to electric mobility that is truly forward-thinking.
