Toyota’s New bZ7 EV Sedan Is Big, Sleek, and Built Just for China

Even in the era of electrification, sedans remain a significant option. In the global EV market, where SUVs dominate, the situation is different in China. Many brands have developed and released Long Wheelbase (LWB) models specifically for the Chinese market, reflecting the country’s strong preference for sedans. In response, Toyota introduced the bZ7, an electric sedan larger than the Grandeur.

With the bZ7, Toyota emphasized the role of sedans in its electrification strategy for China. The bZ7, as the production version of last year’s concept car, expands the bZ series, which includes models like the bZ4X and bZ3, and stands out as the flagship model. With a length of over 5 meters (16.4 feet), it is larger than the Toyota Camry and even exceeds the size of Nissan’s China-specific EV sedan, the N7.

Sleek Fastback Design

Premium Interior

As a flagship sedan, the bZ7 aims to exceed expectations. Its silhouette, reminiscent of the Prius and Crown, features split headlights and roof-mounted sensors for a cutting-edge look. Although its sleek roofline and short rear overhang suggest a hatchback, closer inspection reveals a fastback sedan profile.

The production model refines elements from the concept. Traditional side mirrors replace camera units, and flush door handles improve aerodynamics. The newly revealed interior surpasses the existing bZ lineup in luxury. The dashboard and door trims feature wood panels and ambient lighting, while the white perforated leather seats create a premium electric car atmosphere.

Large Touchscreen with Physical Controls

Lexus-Level Refinement

A large infotainment screen dominates the center console, complemented by physical buttons for key functions, enhancing usability. The digital instrument cluster is paired with a head-up display. The bright interior color scheme contributes to a premium feel, likely attracting many potential customers.

The two-tone, three-spoke steering wheel evokes a design reminiscent of Volvo or Polestar models. Toyota defines this vehicle as a flagship BEV sedan exclusively for the Chinese market, emphasizing a distinct level of sophistication compared to the existing bZ series. Its quality and features could easily be placed alongside Lexus models.

Premium Pricing

Sedans Still Command Respect

While the official pricing has not been announced, the bZ7 is expected to be priced significantly higher than the bZ3. Its main competitors include the Tesla Model 3, Nissan N7, and local premium EV brands like NIO and Avatr.

As of March 2025, the Tesla Model 3, a key competitor, was priced at 235,500 CNY (approximately 34,400 USD) in China. The base price is 35,000 USD, and higher trims are expected to be priced in the mid-to-late 30,000 USD range.

The Toyota bZ7 is a strategic model aimed at the Chinese market. It combines the image of a sleek, large, fastback electric sedan with a spacious design. In the global shift towards electric SUVs, the bZ7 aims to demonstrate that sedans can still maintain a strong presence in the market, making its market reception highly anticipated.
