The Mazda RX-7, once considered the dream sports car model for automotive enthusiasts in the 1970s and 1980s, reappeared. The vehicle is a 1982 RX-7 FB GSL trim, which has only been driven 1,567 miles (approximately 2,522 km) over 43 years, maintaining a condition nearly identical to that of a new car. Its exceptional condition has earned it the nickname ‘time capsule car.’

This model was recently listed in an unlimited auction format on the U.S. used car auction platform, Bring a Trailer. Initially sold for 13,940 USD in 1982 (approximately 46,200 USD today, this RX-7 has drawn significant attention from classic car collectors due to its pristine, original condition, seemingly taking collectors back in time.

First-Gen Luxury Meets Impressive Performance

The RX-7 presented here is the later FB model, part of the first-generation lineup produced from 1978 to 1985. It is the highest spec trim, the GSL. Even in base form, the car featured 4-wheel disc brakes, an LSD (Limited Slip Differential), power windows, a Dolby amplifier-equipped audio system, aluminum wheels, and a steel sunroof — all features that set it apart from many competitors of the era. The LSD, a feature still valued in modern sports cars, highlights the RX-7’s high status at the time.

The car’s exterior is finished in Tornado Silver Metallic, with options including air conditioning (610 USD), red leather seats (650 USD), and a 3-speed automatic transmission (355 USD). The U.S. spec model has 100 horsepower and a maximum torque of 14.6 kgf·m (107 lb-ft). The manual transmission model accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.2 seconds, while the automatic model takes 0.5 seconds longer.

Modern Sports Cars May Leave It in the Dust, But the RX-7’s Charm Endures

While the RX-7 may not match modern sports cars in terms of performance, it was a standout in its time. When it was first released, it outperformed the Porsche 924 in the U.S. market, offering excellent value for its price. The rotary engine’s lightweight body and smooth rotation still provide a unique experience today. This particular model has only had minor touch-ups to the exterior bumpers, with the interior and exterior remaining in near-new condition.

With such low mileage, the suspension, brakes, and engine are all in excellent condition, almost like a new car. While it may not have been able to be driven aggressively back in the day, today, driving it leisurely with the air conditioning on allows you to experience the essence of that era, making it feel like a true time capsule, especially with a classic pair of sunglasses.

The Birth of a Legend: Is This the Essence of a Pure Sports Car?

The RX-7, resurfacing after 43 years, marks the beginning of a legend and represents Japan’s challenge to the global sports car market. While its 100 horsepower might seem low by today’s standards, its agile handling and the smooth, unique rotation of the rotary engine still offer a thrilling driving experience that resonates with enthusiasts.

This car holds a piece of automotive history, capturing the essence of an era. Whoever drives it will be reminded of the pure joy of driving, where even cruising at low speeds can be enjoyed. Despite the potential for reliability issues with the rotary engine, many may find a sense of enjoyment in overcoming those challenges. With a current price of 13,300 USD, this car offers a special experience that may appeal to those who appreciate true craftsmanship over more conventional options.
