Mazda’s Electric Sedan Just Took Aim at the EV6—and Might Win

Mazda revealed pricing for its mid-size electric sedan, the Mazda 6e, in the European market and officially began sales.

This mid-size electric sedan, comparable to the Hyundai Sonata, offers a range of 552 km (343 miles) and advanced features, all priced below the Kia EV6. The combination has drawn considerable attention in the industry.

The Mazda 6e starts at 43,775 EUR (about $53,000) in Europe, which is more than 2,500 EUR (about $3,000) cheaper than the Kia EV6. Mazda also offers a launch discount of 4,210 EUR (about $5,025). The base model includes a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, 14.6-inch touchscreen, ambient lighting, and an electronic parking brake.

The latest driver assistance suite, featuring adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, comes standard, along with a remote control system. It is 4,921 mm (193.7 inches) long, 1,890 mm (74.4 inches) wide, 1,491 mm (58.7 inches) high, and has a wheelbase of 2,895 mm. The 6e fits squarely in the mid-size sedan category. The trunk offers 330 to 1,074 liters (11.7 to 37.9 cu ft) of cargo space, ensuring practicality for daily use.

The Mazda 6e offers two battery options. The base model features a 68.8 kWh pack, delivering 483 km (300 miles) of WLTP range, while the long-range version packs an 80 kWh battery for 552 km (343 miles).

Charging capabilities are impressive, with 165 kW DC fast charging support. The long-range version can charge from 10% to 80% in 47 minutes, while the base model accomplishes the same in just 24 minutes, rivaling the best in its class. The 6e employs a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout. The base model produces 258 horsepower, while the long-range version delivers 244 horsepower, generating 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque. With a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of about 7.6 seconds, it offers ample power for everyday driving.

The Mazda 6e showcases a clean, flowing exterior based on the Authentic Modern design philosophy. LED headlights, distinctive rectangular DRLs, and a rear spoiler contribute to its sophisticated appearance. A unique touch is the illuminated grille surround, which indicates charging status. Modern design elements like frameless doors and an active rear spoiler enhance its appeal.

The 6e has a smart cabin system, advanced safety tech, a 360-degree camera, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Mazda plans to launch the 6e in Europe in 2025 and expand into Southeast Asian markets, including Thailand. Although no launch plans have been announced for other countries, the company is expected to expand its global EV strategy in the coming years.
