After a 24-year hiatus, Honda has officially unveiled the production model of the iconic Prelude, a 2-door coupe that first debuted in 1978. The model has significantly transformed, blending classic styling with the latest electrification technology. Honda revealed the key specifications of the new Prelude on April 2, following a two-year development period since the concept’s unveiling at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.
The Prelude, which was produced across five generations from 1978 to 2000, has been resurrected as a hybrid sports coupe. This revival moves away from simply reintroducing the model; instead, it combines modern hybrid technology with a luxurious driving experience, reflecting Honda’s evolving approach to performance vehicles.

Sleek Design and Glider-Inspired Aesthetics
The design of the new Prelude carries forward the “Unlimited Glide” philosophy from the concept model. The exterior is defined by a smooth, glider-like silhouette, with the front design inspired by a glider’s wings. Inside, the “gliding cockpit” theme creates a driving experience that’s both light and exhilarating, evoking a sense of floating on the road.
The two-tone color combination of white and deep blue blends retro appeal with modern sophistication, offering a visual connection to the Prelude’s heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics.
Advanced Powertrain and Performance Enhancements
A major highlight of the new Prelude is its powertrain and chassis configuration. Built on Honda’s e:HEV hybrid system, the Prelude features the next-generation “Honda S+ Shift” technology, which optimizes responsiveness between the engine and the electric motor. This provides a more refined and quicker driving experience, enhancing both performance and driving pleasure.
The chassis is based on the high-performance Honda Civic Type R platform, widely regarded as one of the best FF (front-wheel-drive) platforms. This platform has been specially tuned for grand touring, offering a balance of sportiness and comfort. The suspension employs a dual-axis strut system to improve steering response and road handling, while large Brembo brakes ensure powerful and reliable braking performance.

A Modern Grand Tourer for the Hybrid Era
The Prelude has 19-inch 8.5J wheels and Continental’s “Premium Contact 6” tires, enhancing high-speed stability and ride comfort. This combination creates a configuration that encapsulates the Prelude’s identity as a hybrid sports coupe, providing a dynamic driving experience that pays homage to the past while embracing modern technologies.
Honda emphasized that the Prelude is more than just a nostalgic revival. It is positioned as a new-age grand tourer that blends cutting-edge technology with elegant design. The new Prelude is expected to be introduced to global markets, starting with Japan in the fall of 2025.
Anticipation Builds for the Hybrid Sports Coupe
The revival of the Prelude comes with high expectations as Honda aims to re-establish its presence in the hybrid sports coupe market. The car’s combination of nostalgic appeal, advanced technology, and refined design may make it a standout contender in the growing segment of performance hybrids. As Honda continues evolving its approach to performance vehicles, the Prelude could become a new powerhouse in the hybrid sports coupe category.
