Honda’s S7 SUV Is Coming to China—And It’s Packed with Cool Features

Honda is stepping up its game in China with the debut of the S7, an electric mid-size crossover SUV. Positioned to compete with popular models like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento, the S7 is part of Honda’s larger strategy to expand its Chinese electric vehicle market presence. This move follows a strategic partnership with Dongfeng Motors, which aims to accelerate Honda’s EV development in the region.

Shifting from Ye Brand to Honda Branding

Honda initially intended to introduce its electric vehicles under the Ye brand, which is exclusive to the Chinese market. However, reports indicate that Honda has decided to drop the Ye moniker and launch the S7 under the more widely recognized Honda brand. This decision highlights Honda’s intention to leverage its established reputation to strengthen its connection with Chinese consumers.

Design Features Similar to Kia and Sleek Headlamp Design

This move signals Honda’s intention to leverage its own brand image and strength rather than relying on the Ye (electric vehicle) brand it had previously used. Internally, Honda appears to have put significant effort into crafting a strategy for penetrating the Chinese market, which includes offering the S7 at a competitive price. According to local media, the expected price for the S7 is around 200,000 yuan (approximately $27,480).

The S7 will be officially launched in China on March 6. Ahead of the launch, the vehicle has already arrived at various dealerships and is being displayed in cities across the country. The S7 features horizontal and vertical daytime running lights that resemble Kia’s Starmap signature lighting. The sharp, sporty design of the headlamps is complemented by the V-shaped daytime running lights, enhancing the vehicle’s sleek, dynamic appearance.

Rugged and Sturdy Rear Design, Ye Brand Logo Removed

The vehicle’s rear features a robust and solid appearance, continuing from the height-maintaining roofline and straight side profile. The boxy body design, aimed at maximizing rear space, includes horizontal and vertical taillamps mirroring the front. A distinctive feature is the straight, voluminous rear body shape, which incorporates a protruding design. Additionally, the Ye brand logo has been removed from the rear, signaling the complete abandonment of the Ye name.

A straight-line daytime running light has been added between the lamps, following the bonnet’s parting line. The elongated lamp design creates an electrified and futuristic look at the front. Meanwhile, the bumper design is integrated into the trapezoidal area of the front fascia, with a wide air intake placed at the bottom.

Dimensions and Powertrain Specifications

The Honda S7’s dimensions are comparable to Hyundai Santa Fe’s. It measures 4,750 mm (187 inches) in length, 1,930 mm (76 inches) in width, and 1,625 mm (64 inches) in height and features a 2,930 mm (115.4 inches) wheelbase. While it is slightly shorter than the Santa Fe, it has a longer wheelbase, offering more interior space. The S7 will have two powertrain options: a dual-motor all-wheel drive version with 469 horsepower and a rear-wheel drive single motor model with 200 horsepower. It will also feature an 89.8 kWh battery from CATL, providing a driving range of up to 620 km (385 miles) on a single charge.

Interior Features and Technology

The S7 embraces a high-tech, modern aesthetic inside. It features a two-tone steering wheel and dashboard with black-and-white accents. The dashboard includes a large 24-inch display, a 9.9-inch instrument panel, and a 21.9-inch augmented reality head-up display, offering a cutting-edge digital experience. Additionally, the vehicle has a separate screen on the door for the digital side mirror view. The S7 will also be equipped with Honda’s latest driver assistance system, the Honda Sensing 360+.
