$60K for a Civic? Mitsuoka’s M55 Is a Bold Blend of Past and Present

Mitsuoka, the Japanese automaker known for its unconventional designs, is again drawing attention with its latest limited-edition model—the M55 1st Edition. Based on the Honda Civic, the M55 bears little resemblance to its donor car, instead channeling the aesthetics of classic American muscle cars with a uniquely Japanese twist.

Following the sold-out success of the M55 Zero Edition in 2024, Mitsuoka has increased production for the new release, with 250 units planned. Deliveries will begin in 2026, and pre-orders in Japan have already sparked strong demand.

Civic Bones, Muscle Car Style

Though the M55 1st Edition is structurally based on the Honda Civic, its design is bolder than any Civic to date. The front features four round LED headlamps and a wide grille reminiscent of a 1970s Dodge Challenger, while the rear adopts a fastback shape evoking the louvered styling of the Ford Mustang. In short, it’s a Japanese interpretation infused with nostalgia for classic muscle cars.

Mitsuoka offers 10 distinct paint options, including finishes like Platinum White Pearl and Seabed Blue Pearl, designed to emphasize individuality and rarity. Combined with its limited production run and a first-come, first-served sales approach, the M55 is aimed squarely at buyers seeking exclusivity and visual impact.

The limited production further elevates the car’s exclusivity. With only 250 units available globally, Mitsuoka maintains a strict first-come, first-served policy.

Functional Powertrain, Premium Interior, and Pricing

While the exterior is eccentric, the powertrain is surprisingly practical. The standard model has a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 180 horsepower. Honda’s e:HEV hybrid powertrain is also an option for eco-conscious consumers. Buyers can choose from three trims depending on their performance preferences and budget.

The interior retains the framework of the Honda Civic but adds Mitsuoka’s unique touch. Premium leather seats, contrasting stitching, and carbon-style trim enhance the quality of the finish. The steering wheel bears the M55 Mitsuoka emblem, underscoring the vehicle’s distinct identity. These are details for those who value things that are far from ordinary.

Pricing in Japan starts at approximately $50,500 for the gasoline model, with the top-tier hybrid version reaching around $56,200. With premium paint, leather seats, and carbon interior options added, the price can exceed $60,100. Though far more expensive than a standard Civic, the M55 stands out with its “one-of-a-kind character.”
