Volvo’s Aero Truck Crushes Competition, Takes Top Eco Award in Germany

Volvo Trucks’ FH Aero, the company’s most fuel-efficient truck, has clinched the top prize at Germany’s 2025 Green Truck Award. This achievement reaffirms the truck’s superior fuel efficiency and eco-friendly technology.

The Green Truck Award, jointly organized by German commercial vehicle publications Trucker and Verkehrs-Rundschau, is a prestigious fuel efficiency test for commercial vehicles. It annually recognizes the most fuel-efficient long-haul trucks in the industry.

The Volvo FH Aero showcases cutting-edge technologies, including an advanced aerodynamic design, a high-efficiency D13 diesel engine, the I-Save package, and a camera-based monitor system. During independent testing, it achieved an impressive average fuel consumption of 21.20 liters per 100 kilometers under real-world driving conditions, a figure considered exceptional in the industry.

Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, expressed pride in FH Aero’s outstanding performance. He said this reputable fuel efficiency test again validates FH Aero’s exceptional capabilities. By reducing CO2 emissions and operational costs, he emphasized their commitment to driving technological innovation forward.

Launched in 2024, the Volvo FH Aero features a new aerodynamic design that cuts fuel consumption and carbon emissions by up to 5% compared to its predecessor. The model has four variants: diesel, electric, gas, and FH16. Notably, the diesel and gas versions are compatible with renewable fuels such as biogas, biodiesel, and HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil), positioning it as a sustainable transportation solution.

Roger Alm, Volvo Trucks’ president, highlighted this award as one of three recent company accomplishments. He noted that in 2024, Volvo Trucks achieved a five-star rating in Euro NCAP, Europe’s first large truck safety test, and became Europe’s best-selling large truck brand. With this recognition for fuel efficiency, they have hit a remarkable trifecta in the industry.

In November 2024, the Volvo FH Aero and FM models became the first large trucks to receive a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP truck category evaluation. They also jointly secured the City Safe Award for their outstanding urban safety features.
