Mazda is seriously preparing to enter the electric SUV market in China with the upcoming CX-6e. The brand recently registered the CX-6e trademark in China, and virtual renderings based on the design have already surfaced, fueling anticipation for Mazda’s first mid-size electric SUV.

The CX-6e is expected to reflect Mazda’s latest design philosophy while incorporating future-focused electric vehicle (EV) elements. Positioned between the CX-5 and CX-50 in Mazda’s lineup, it will serve as a strategic model to strengthen the brand’s foothold in the hybrid and pure electric SUV markets.

Modern, Sleek Design with EV-specific touches

The CX-6e design, as revealed through rendering, is similar to the existing Mazda SUV, but new changes have been applied here and there. The Mazda signature front grille is maintained for the front, but the closed design, unique to EVs, has been adopted. The grille frame is garnished with high black gloss to give it a differentiated impression, and the emblem is even processed with chrome to create a luxurious atmosphere.

The headlamps feature a sharp shape, and the tail lamps are designed to be thin and long, further enhancing the sophisticated atmosphere of the front. Flush-type door handles are applied to the side, which improves aerodynamic performance while completing a clean appearance. The wheel arch covers, and side skirts with black finish serve as elements that emphasize the luxuriousness of an urban SUV.

The rear emphasizes a simple design, and the slim tail lamps are designed to span the entire vehicle. The lighting elements with the Mazda lettering maximize the advanced feel of an EV, and the black diffuser applied to the lower part of the bumper adds a sporty feel. Overall, the design of the CX-6e seems to reflect Mazda’s intention to establish its own identity in the electric SUV market. The body size of the CX-6e is expected to be around that of the mid-size SUV, the CX-60.

Mazda Strengthens Electrification Strategy Conquering the Global SUV Market with CX-6e

Mazda plans to expand its EV lineup through the CX-6e and further strengthen its position in the Chinese market, which is considered a fierce battleground for EVs. In addition, Mazda is currently preparing the third-generation CX-5 equipped with its hybrid powertrain, and the CX-6e is likely to be a strategic model that expands the lineup with a pure electric model.

The CX-6e is expected to be produced based on the design of the recently revealed Arata Concept SUV. An EV-only platform is expected to secure competitiveness in driving range and performance. Mazda plans to expand its electrified models based on differentiated design and technological prowess in the existing internal combustion engine-centered SUV market.

Mazda’s electrification strategy is not a simple trend but an essential indicator of the brand’s direction. Whether the CX-6e will be launched and the final specifications are revealed, attention is focused on what position Mazda will occupy in the electric SUV market. The industry is paying close attention to whether the CX-6e can become a key model accelerating Mazda’s transition to electrification.
