Renault’s Espace, which debuted as an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) in 1984, will become a crossover SUV after 40 years.

Renault will soon unveil a facelifted version of the Espace, competing with the Volkswagen Tayron, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento.

The new Espace will be based on a long-wheelbase version of the Renault Austral, offering increased interior space. While maintaining its strength in space utilization, it has been redesigned to enhance competitiveness in the SUV market.

Design Changes Focused on the Front End

The most noticeable updates are in the front design. According to released renderings, the new Espace will feature a redesigned hood, radiator grille, and headlights, giving it a more modern and refined appearance.

The headlights will adopt a vertical design, creating a bolder visual impact. While minor adjustments will be made to the rear, the side profile is expected to remain unchanged from the current model.

Interior and Powertrain Updates

The interior layout will remain broadly similar to the current model but is expected to feature higher-quality materials. The latest advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) will also be included, improving driving convenience.

The powertrain will retain the current engine lineup but will be refined to meet updated emissions standards.

A 300-horsepower plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model is expected to be introduced by 2026, further strengthening the company’s market position.

Increased Competition in the SUV Market

Renault plans to unveil the new Espace later this year. Transitioning from an MPV to a crossover SUV aims to meet consumers’ evolving demands.

Despite the already competitive SUV market, the Espace’s repositioning as a crossover is expected to intensify competition further. Particular attention will be paid to how it fares against the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento.

With the new Espace, Renault aims to establish a strong foothold in the SUV segment. The potential for future model expansions will likely depend on consumer response.
