Ars Technica reported on Monday that Tesla will test its autonomous Cybercab service in Austin, Texas this June.

The automaker has chosen Texas as its testing ground, bypassing California’s stringent regulations and capitalizing on a more conducive environment for autonomous vehicle operations.

Austin already offers self-driving services from industry leaders like Waymo and Volkswagen, setting the stage for fierce competition as Tesla’s Cybercab enters the fray.

Despite the promising location, Tesla still faces regulatory hurdles. Texas law mandates that autonomous vehicles adhere to state traffic and vehicle regulations, implement data logging systems, and report any incidents.

Industry experts have raised concerns about Tesla’s track record, noting that its partially automated systems have been subject to multiple federal safety probes. Critics argue that the company has primarily deflected responsibility for issues related to its autonomous driving technology.

Ars Technica expressed skepticism about Tesla’s ability to successfully deploy the Cybercab, highlighting potential controversies surrounding liability in the event of collisions or accidents.
