Developed by Daihatsu Indonesia specifically for the local market, the Sigra was introduced in response to the country’s Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) policy, which encourages the production of affordable, fuel-efficient vehicles. This compact seven-seater minivan features a 2-3-2 seating layout, maximizing passenger space within a small footprint.

Previously, Daihatsu partnered with Toyota to develop the Ayla hatchback, which aligned with the LCGC initiative and proved successful in the Indonesian market. As demand grew for a minivan that met the same regulatory standards, Daihatsu created the Sigra. It was designed to replace the Xenia, which had a larger engine that did not comply with Indonesia’s environmental requirements.

The Sigra: Designed for Local Standards, Backed by Incentives

Daihatsu launched the Sigra in Indonesia in 2016. As with Ayla, the Sigra was co-developed with Toyota. While Daihatsu markets it as the Sigra, Toyota offers the same model under the Calya. Both have gained considerable popularity in the region. Because the Sigra complies with LCGC program standards, it qualifies for various government incentives, helping it remain a competitively priced seven-seater tailored to local needs.

The Sigra received a sportier facelift in 2019 and minor styling tweaks in 2022. It was recently showcased at the 2024 GAIKINDO Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW), a major local auto event, where it remained on display until December 1, 2024.

Compact Yet Capable: Big Value in a Small Footprint
Available with Efficient 1.0L and 1.2L Engines

The Sigra is 4,110 mm (161.8 inches) long, 1,655 mm (65.2 inches) wide, and 1,600 mm (63 inches) high, with a wheelbase of 2,525 mm (99.4 inches). Its rear doors use a conventional hinged design for ease of access. Engine options include a 1.0-liter three-cylinder (1KR-VE) and a 1.2-liter four-cylinder (3NR-VE), producing 66 hp and 87 hp respectively, with maximum torque of 9.1 kgf·m (65.8 lb-ft) and 11 kgf·m (79.6 lb-ft).

A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, while 1.2L models are also available with a 4-speed automatic. The exterior styling, refreshed in 2019 and 2022, emphasizes sportiness, with sharp headlights integrated into an angular grille. A silver upper trim and a black-accented lower fascia with triangular fog lights complete the design.

Smart Interior Design Meets Affordability
Affordably Priced for Budget-Conscious Families

The Sigra’s interior is engineered for space efficiency. It has a centrally located gear shifter and climate controls, and controls for the side mirrors are conveniently placed near the driver.

Now responsible for 30% of Daihatsu Indonesia’s local sales, the Sigra has become a core model in the lineup. Its popularity can be attributed to its ability to accommodate larger families, which is common in Indonesian households, while offering stability and reliability in various road conditions. With a starting price of 139 million IDR (approximately 8,200 USD), the Sigra delivers exceptional value for families seeking practicality at a low cost.
