Mercedes-Benz to Equip Smart Cars with Chinese LiDAR — Will It Hurt the Brand?

Mercedes-Benz has made headlines with its surprising announcement that it will install autonomous driving lidar sensors from Chinese company Hesai Technology in its upcoming smart cars. This decision, made when the automaker faced ongoing struggles, has caught consumers’ attention worldwide and raised questions about the brand’s future.

This marks the first time a global automaker has opted to use Chinese technology in a product intended for sale in global markets, not just in China. Mercedes-Benz officials have dismissed any controversy surrounding the move, calling it “an extremely commercial decision.” However, the choice to integrate Chinese technology into its high-end vehicles has sparked widespread debate.

A Strategic Move to Cut Costs While Maintaining Performance

On March 11, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would install a 3D sensor lidar for autonomous driving developed by Chinese autonomous driving company Hesai Technology in its smart car under development. It added that this would be sold in the global market, not in the local Chinese specifications and that the decision was made after careful review.

Meredes-Benz appears to have decided to maximize profitability while maintaining the model’s performance. This is because Hesai is the largest lidar sensor manufacturer in China. This strategy is interpreted as achieving cost-reduction effects through economies of scale and mass production capabilities.

Is Partnering with Hesai a Smart Strategy for Mercedes-Benz?

At first glance, Mercedes-Benz’s decision makes sense. China’s autonomous driving technology is considered competitive on a global scale, and Hesai’s expansion plans, which include increasing production to 2 million lidar sensors annually, make it an attractive partner for Mercedes-Benz.

However, there are risks. The ongoing slump in Mercedes-Benz’s sales is partly attributed to a weakening brand image. As the brand increasingly incorporates Chinese parts into its vehicles, some consumers feel that the luxury status of Mercedes-Benz is being undermined. Using key components like lidar sensors from China could further erode the brand’s perception as a premium German automaker.

Mixed Reactions from Consumers and Confidence from Mercedes-Benz

Despite the concerns, Mercedes-Benz remains confident in its decision, increasingly relying on Chinese products for economic reasons. The automaker believes that this collaboration with Hesai will not significantly harm the value of the Mercedes-Benz name. However, the impact on its brand reputation remains to be seen.

As the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Hesai unfolds, all eyes will be on the automaker’s future actions and how consumers respond to this new direction in the company’s use of technology.
