Nissan unveiled a new pickup truck model as part of its electrification strategy. The Frontier Pro is Nissan’s first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) pickup truck, signaling its global expansion focusing on the Chinese market. This model is based on the locally developed Z9, produced by Zhengzhou Nissan, and takes a completely different direction from the existing North American Frontier Pro-X. Notably, it blends design cues from the 1980s Nissan D21 Hardbody with advanced driving technologies.
The Frontier Pro marks the first application of Nissan’s PHEV technology in the pickup truck segment and is expected to be the starting point for various future electrification strategies. Offering an EV driving range of up to 135 km (84 miles) in China, a system output of over 407 horsepower, and strong off-road capabilities, this vehicle demonstrates versatility and technological advancement. Production is set to begin in China later this year, with future export plans.

The Frontier Pro: Hybrid Technology Transforms the Pickup Truck
The Nissan Frontier Pro is equipped with a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a high-output electric motor. This system, paired with an electric motor mounted on the automatic transmission, delivers a total output of 407 horsepower and a maximum torque of 81.6 kgm (600 lb-ft), providing powerful performance. Despite the PHEV system, the truck maintains optimized off-road capabilities without losing power output. Notably, the electronic rear differential lock, 5-link rear suspension, and intelligent all-wheel drive system ensure exceptional off-road performance.
The Frontier Pro can travel up to 135 km (around 84 miles) in EV mode alone, which is impressive compared to its competitors in the segment. This EV driving range, measured according to Chinese standards, enables eco-friendly driving with zero emissions for urban commuting and short trips. With this model, Nissan aims to present a practical PHEV pickup that satisfies electrification and efficiency. Its capabilities are especially appealing to individual consumers and commercial customers.
Also, the Frontier Pro offers various driving modes, providing a customized driving experience. Hybrid, Pure EV, and Performance modes allow the driver to select the optimal driving feel based on the situation. This design reflects Nissan’s driver-focused philosophy, showcasing the value beyond just the powertrain.

A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and the Future: Frontier Pro’s Design Strategy
The Frontier Pro’s exterior design masterfully combines retro and modern elements. Drawing inspiration from Nissan’s iconic D21 Hardbody from the 1980s, it boasts a robust and bold appearance. The strong front grille and angular body lines offer a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional pickup truck image. This design evokes nostalgia for longtime Nissan fans while providing a fresh impression for new customers.
The interior design harmonizes a digital-centric infotainment environment with high-end convenience features. A large 14.6-inch display and digital instrument panel enhance the experience, while the front seats include heating, ventilation, and massage functions, offering comfort that rivals premium SUVs. The electronic cargo bed cover enhances functionality and convenience.
Overall, the Frontier Pro can be seen as a multi-performance vehicle suited to the electrified era. With Nissan’s technology and design identity embodied in this model, it is expected to become a strong contender in the PHEV pickup truck market. The Frontier Pro is poised to mark the intersection of the past and the future, playing a key role in ushering in a new era for Nissan.
