Volvo unveiled the new S90 on April 17, marking the second facelift for the second-generation model. The new version improves the exterior design, interior layout, and driving performance. Volvo plans to target the market again by incorporating the latest technologies and design language into this flagship sedan, which internal combustion engines have traditionally powered.

Standout enhancements include improved quietness and standard adaptive suspension. Upgraded sound insulation and noise reduction design significantly lower cabin noise, while the active suspension system, which dynamically controls road impacts, greatly enhances ride comfort. The new S90 won’t be available in the U.S. or the U.K. It’s expected to become a key player in Volvo’s dual-track strategy alongside the upcoming all-electric ES90.

Thor’s Hammer Reimagined

Elevating Internal Combustion Elegance

The new S90 adopts the latest design language seen in the XC90 and XC60, redefining the aesthetics of internal combustion vehicles. The front features sleek Thor’s hammer matrix LED headlights, complemented by a grille with diagonal patterns and a wide air intake, creating a commanding yet dynamic presence. It exudes a sharper and more refined aura than its predecessor, maximizing its flagship status.

The side profile showcases new diamond-cut two-tone wheels, emphasizing a sense of depth. The rear taillight design has also been updated, replacing the previous C shape with a new light design inspired by Thor’s Hammer, creating a more unified look. Aurora Silver and Mulberry Red have added new exterior colors, expanding consumer options. These design changes enhance the vehicle’s exterior and solidify the brand’s identity.

Inside, an 11.2-inch display dominates the center console. This larger screen offers improved visibility, touch responsiveness, and an intuitive user interface for enhanced usability. The incorporation of premium materials elevates the interior’s luxurious feel. The combination of a quiet cabin and an advanced infotainment system promises a comfortable experience for passengers.

Harmony of Quietness and Power

Hybrid-Based Powertrain

The new S90 has adaptive suspension as a standard feature, significantly improving ride quality. This system automatically adjusts the damping force based on driving conditions, absorbing road shocks and ensuring a quiet, stable ride. Also, repositioned sound-absorbing materials and structural improvements have increased cabin quietness, resulting in an interior that offers tranquility and comfort.

The powertrain lineup includes a 2.0L turbocharged gasoline mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid option. The mild hybrid focuses on efficiency and practicality, while the PHEV aims to balance eco-friendliness with performance. Notably, the PHEV model can travel up to 80 km (50 miles) on electric power alone, making it suitable for daily urban commutes without gasoline.

With the new S90, Volvo is committed to redefining the pinnacle of internal combustion engine flagships. At the same time, the company targets diverse consumer segments alongside the ES90, a key part of its electrification strategy. Industry analysts suggest that Volvo’s dual-track approach, offering internal combustion and electric vehicle options, reflects a flexible response to evolving market dynamics.
