Tesla is gearing up to launch its refreshed Model Y, with production set to begin at its Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, this January. Recent reports from Chinese media outlets confirm that Tesla has conveyed production schedules to factory insiders, signaling that the release of the updated Model Y is imminent. Prototypes of the new Model Y have already been spotted in both China and the United States, showcasing a significant departure in appearance from the current model. With these sightings, consumer interest continues to rise, especially as a rendering based on the latest prototype has been shared.

Front-End Overhaul: Split Headlamps Spark Controversy

The new Model Y, as depicted in a rendering by Russian media outlet Kolesa, features a front-end design with split headlamps, a look previously seen in prototype images. While the precise shape of the headlamps has not been revealed, the rendering suggests a unique design that combines horizontal and vertical connections. The lower lamp is designed to connect to a vertical air intake on the side, emphasizing a sharp, sporty look.

However, the split lamp design has sparked controversy, with some consumers comparing it to the headlamp styling of the Polestar electric vehicle (EV). If this design makes it to mass production, it’s expected to provoke debate over its similarity to Polestar’s design language. The air intake on the bumper retains the trapezoidal shape seen in previous models, though it has been expanded slightly.

Rear Design: Futuristic Light Bar and Angular Tail Lamps

Leaked images of the rear design have revealed an updated look featuring a light bar that extends across the full width of the rear, with the Tesla logo and a camera positioned above it. This feature is also shown in the rendering, but with slight modifications to match the mass-production version. The light bar is thinner and closer to a strip shape than previously seen in the leaks, contributing to the vehicle’s futuristic appearance.

The rear lamps have also been updated to an angular shape similar to those found on the Model 3. These new lamps extend sharply toward the rear quarter panel, enhancing the vehicle’s bold, modern design. The rear bumper has also been reworked, and a diffuser with a horizontal reflector is now integrated, adding to the updated visual of the back end.

Interior and Performance: Changes Expected for a Sleeker Experience

The new Model Y Long Range and Performance versions will be equipped with a larger 95 kWh battery, offering more than a 10% increase in driving range. This performance boost is a key selling point for consumers looking for greater efficiency in their EVs.

Inside, the Model Y facelift is expected to follow the design layout of the new Model 3, with some key updates to enhance the overall luxury experience. Expected changes include relocating ambient lighting to the door panels and using more upscale materials, further elevating the interior’s refined atmosphere.
