Reports indicate that Toyota has delayed the launch of its compact SUV, Land Cruiser FJ (tentative name). According to Japanese media, the Land Cruiser FJ was expected to debut in the second half of this year. However, due to delays in the production of the Land Cruiser 250, global certification processes, and escalating trade conflicts, Toyota has reportedly adjusted the schedule to early 2026.

The FJ project represents Toyota’s strategy to embrace its traditional off-road heritage while targeting the growing demand for compact SUVs. Enthusiasts disappointed by the FJ Cruiser’s discontinuation are interested in this upcoming model.

Inspired By a Concept Car Design

The Land Cruiser FJ will likely be based on the compact Cruiser EV concept car that Toyota introduced in 2021. The updated design retains a boxy shape with modern elements. Traditional off-roading features such as high ground clearance, a rear-mounted spare tire, and trapezoidal fenders are present, while straight LED lights and digital-style headlights contribute to a more modern look.

Reports from Japan suggest the Land Cruiser FJ may be developed as a body-on-frame SUV, providing added strength and off-road capability. It is expected to be 4,500 mm (177 inches) long with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (108 inches), making it smaller than the midsize RAV4 but larger than the Corolla Cross. It may feature a front double wishbone or MacPherson strut suspension and a rear rigid axle or multi-link system.

Toyota reportedly considers a 2.7-liter 2TR-FE naturally aspirated gasoline engine the base powertrain, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a torque-sensing limited-slip differential four-wheel-drive system. It is expected to deliver 161 horsepower and 246 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid options are also being explored.

Equipped with Various Powertrains, Targeted for Global Markets

The hybrid model may use the 2.5-liter system found in the RAV4 for North America, while Europe may receive a 2.0-liter PHEV from the Prius lineup. This strategy would allow Toyota to align better with local environmental regulations and preferences. The expected price is around 4 million JPY (approximately $27,000).

The Land Cruiser FJ is designed to complement Toyota’s SUV lineup, which currently focuses on larger off-road vehicles. Built on the IMV 0 platform, it aims to combine utility and durability with features intended to appeal to younger drivers. Toyota plans to launch the model in several global markets, including North America, Europe, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

Although the timeline has been delayed, the Land Cruiser FJ will likely gain attention with its hybrid options, compact proportions, and off-road abilities. Interest is building as Toyota prepares to reintroduce the FJ name in a more practical, modern form.
