BYD introduced the Seal 05 DM-i, the latest addition to its Seal lineup, making waves in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. This affordable family sedan is gaining attention among value-conscious consumers.

Car News China spotlighted the Seal 05 DM-i, which was officially launched in February.

The new model pairs BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid technology with a sleek exterior and high-end features.

The Seal 05 DM-i costs 89,800 CNY (approximately $13,000) and targets buyers seeking efficiency and cutting-edge tech. A key highlight is BYD’s advanced driver assistance system, God’s Eye ADAS.

The Seal 05 DM-i follows the design language of BYD’s Ocean series, offering a youthful and modern appeal. Its front end features wave-inspired LED headlights, a trapezoidal black grille, and a U-shaped air intake, all of which contribute to a streamlined aerodynamic design.

The vehicle is 4,780 mm (188.2 inches) long, 1,837 mm (72.3 inches) wide, and 1,515 mm (59.6 inches) high, with a wheelbase of 2,718 mm (107 inches)—slightly more compact than the Seal 06 DM-i.

The rear end features a full-width LED light bar and concealed exhaust tips for a refined look, while a subtle ducktail spoiler adds a sporty touch.

The tailgate displays the Seal 05 emblem. Customers can choose gray, white, black, or two-tone exterior colors. A triple-camera array at the front is joined by additional cameras on the fenders and side mirrors.

Inside, a calming blend of gray and beige tones sets the mood. BYD’s signature rotating floating display and rectangular digital instrument cluster take center stage, featuring the user-friendly DiLink infotainment system.

The D-shaped multifunction steering wheel, crystal gear selector, dual cup holders, and wireless charging pad enhance the driving experience. Physical buttons for key functions improve ease of use while driving.

Premium synthetic leather seats provide comfort on long journeys, and rear passengers can enjoy a foldable armrest with cupholders. The car offers ample storage with door pockets, a glove box, and a spacious center console. The 508-liter (17.9 cu ft) trunk expands with the rear seats folded down.

BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid system pairs a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with a 120 kW electric motor. The powertrain delivers seamless transitions between EV and hybrid modes and strong acceleration.

A 15.9 kWh blade battery offers up to 90 km (56 miles) of all-electric range (CLTC). In hybrid mode, fuel efficiency reaches 33.8 km/l (79.5 mpg), with a total range exceeding 2,000 km (1,243 miles).

The suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing road imperfections while maintaining stability in corners. Light and responsive steering makes the Seal 05 DM-i well-suited for urban environments.

Higher trims offer ADAS features like lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control. However, navigation-integrated driving functions are currently under development.

BYD’s God’s Eye ADAS uses 12 cameras, 5 millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors for comprehensive environmental awareness. The system supports lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, and automated parking.

The automatic parking function accurately detected spaces and parking with minimal driver input in tests. A smartphone-controlled remote parking function adds convenience in tight spots.

While it may not yet match the refinement of Xpeng’s XNGP or Huawei’s Qiankun 3.0, it proves highly capable for everyday use.

The Seal 05 DM-i is a well-balanced compact sedan that combines refined styling, efficient hybrid tech, and smart safety features. Its 2,000+ km (1,243+ miles) range makes it ideal for both daily commutes and long trips.

The price starts at around $13,000, offering strong value for budget-conscious families. Higher trims appeal to tech-savvy drivers with premium upgrades.

The Seal 05 DM-i strikes an excellent balance of efficiency, comfort, and innovation, making it a compelling choice for first-time car buyers or families seeking a feature-rich hybrid sedan.
