Audi revealed its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) A5, dubbed the ‘A5 e-hybrid,’ set to replace the A4 in its lineup.

The new model has two power variants—300 and 367 hp—and features a 25.9 kWh battery, enabling an all-electric range of up to 110 km (68 miles).

The A5 e-hybrid will be available in Avant (wagon) and sedan body styles. It is scheduled to launch in Europe in 2025.

Performance: 68-Mile Range and Up to 367 Horsepower

The A5 e-hybrid’s powertrain combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TFSI turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor delivering up to 140 kW.

The total output varies by trim: 300 hp for the base model and 367 hp for the high-performance version. Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system is standard on both.

The 300 hp model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 5.9 seconds, while the 367 hp version does it in just 5.1 seconds. Both models have a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

A standout feature is the high-capacity 25.9 kWh battery (20.7 kWh usable), representing a 45% increase over its predecessor. This allows up to 110 km of all-electric driving under the WLTP test cycle.

The larger battery allows most daily commutes to be driven on electric power alone. Charging is faster, too, with the 11 kW AC system delivering a full charge in around 2.5 hours.

Intelligent Energy Management and Driving Modes

The A5 e-hybrid includes an intelligent regenerative braking system to maximize efficiency. This system automatically adjusts regenerative braking levels based on navigation data, and drivers can set their preferred maximum battery charge level while on the move.

Two primary driving modes are offered: EV mode for all-electric operation and ‘Hybrid’ mode for optimized efficiency using both power sources. In Hybrid mode, the system uses navigation data to calculate the most efficient energy strategy for the entire route.

Audi began accepting European orders for the A5 e-hybrid on Thursday, with deliveries starting in April.

In Germany, the A5 sedan e-hybrid quattro starts at €62,500 (approximately $68,000), and the A5 Avant e-hybrid quattro starts at €64,150 (about $70,000).

The A5 e-hybrid would compete with plug-in hybrid versions of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series. Analysts noted that the extended electric range significantly boosts the practicality of plug-in hybrids for daily driving.
